    Default Meningitis vaccine....questions

I had one 10 years ago - and recently had another one (of course, the vaccine has changed some since I first had one). The shot didn't hurt at all but the days after the shot- my arm has been incredibly sore (from shoulder to elbow - all sore), a pink slight bumpy rash has developed at the injection site... I never have any kind of reactions when I get a vaccine but I am abnormally alot sorer then I expected to be - and this is day 3. Anyone else experience this too?

"Redness, pain, swelling or lump at the injection site and a rash are side effects of the vaccination" according to a google search.

You should worry if there is "difficulty in breathing, wheezing, hives, pale complexion, dizziness, swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat and rapid or irregular heartbeat."

I would observe a few more days and if it doesn't improve maybe call and speak to a nurse or your doctor.

The stiffness and soreness doesn't concern me as much as the rash that has formed at the injection site - the rash is itchy and red in nature (Now I am prone to excema but this is so concentrated at the injection site and developed after the vaccine that I don't think it's excema). Here is what the rash looks like on day 4 after the vaccine. Has anyone else experienced this as well? I'm worried...

Aw hon, it does look pretty itchy! Can you put cortizone or neosporin on it, I'm not an expert so maybe someone else can chime in......also you may be able to take benedryl.

I am not worried about the uncomfortableness from the itch - I am just worried about the vaccine itself - since it's bacterial meningitis vaccine and not the flu shot - is it possible to get bacterial meningitis from the vaccine or die from the vaccine? I know one syptom of B.M. is a rash but I also have read that the vaccine cause mild symptoms of what one would have if they had the disease too.... but rash was never specifically listed....

MCV4 - it's one of the newer Bacterial Meningitis vaccine.... by newer, I mean, not the same bacterial M. vaccine that they gave out a decade ago. I've tried looking up a bunch of stuff online and they do say that you can get some mild symptoms - such as sore & stiff and small fever after the vaccine -but nothing says you can get a rash at the injection site - and from what Ive learned in my investigate work - a rash is a symptom of the bacterial meningitis vaccine - but then again so is stiff & achey.... I don't know - I am probably worrying for nothing - but the fact this isn't a flu vaccine - but rather a vaccine that is to protect you against something so deadly that can attack so fast - it just makes me worry that maybe I am having some fluke reaction that could trigger something worse..... I was just hoping someone else who also got the vaccine - might look at the photo and say - same exact thing happened to them??

    This is what I found:
Can the Meningococcal Vaccine Cause Meningococcal Disease?

The short answer is no. There are actually two meningococcal vaccines licensed in the U.S. Neither of the vaccines contains live bacteria.
The vaccines contain antigens -- substances that trigger the body's immune system and cause it to make antibodies. These antibodies then protect the body by attacking and killing the bacteria if it should invade.

I really don't think that it's that unusual to get a rash with vaccines. You could try some benadryl to see if that helps clear it up.

Also my son got the shot last June. He didn't get a rash though.
