At my January appt. my rheumatology Dr. told me if I refused to take the meds prescribed, there was nothing more he could do for me.
I told him if he could refer me to a Dr. who could help reduce the inflamation, I will put up with the pain. He told me he was impressed with a Dr. in the
adjoining complex at Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine and would give me a referral if I promised to come back to him in May for x-rays to determine the amount of damage to my body, if any.

Two weeks later I had an appointment with Dr.Leopold, and just wish I had been referred to him back in October when I was first "hit" with RA. He was concerned about the severity of my case i.e. 140 C-reactive protein blood test, but was eager to help me without those biologic drugs that cause so many side effects. He put me on Kaprex (dietary supplement) and InflamaSYN, a gel capsule with theraputic amounts of Rosemary, tumeric, ginger, holy basil, green tea, hu zhang, Chinese goldthread, barberry, oregano and Baikal scullcap. Continue the anti-inflamatory foods.

After 3days...yes, only 3 days, DH and I noticed a slight improvement. To skip through a month + of this regimen...yes, I know I still have RA, (pain and some inflamation) no miracle remission (yet, still hoping) but the progress has now become remarkable and noticeable by all my friends. I am actually typing with all my fingers LOL getting around, climbing stairs, light housework, weeding (which DH was mad that I did even though he said I did a good job!). Still can't kneel, so have to bend over to
    weed or plant anything.

    Major progress:
    First travel function since Oct.
Last week Sheri picked me up and we did a ship tour and luncheon on Oceania's new ship Marina. Fantastic!! So elegant and the food was superb.

    Future progress:
I am going to drive next week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Actually can go to the stores and hunt for tearpads I can't wait Only an avid couponer can understand how important a milestone this is

I want to thank all the wonderful members who posted in this thread and gave me great information and encouragement when I was struggling with the "big decision"!

Thanks for the update. I was just wondering about you a few days ago. I'm so glad you found a path to healing that doesn't involve drugs and a doctor that was willing to work with you. I've been in that place of not being able to drive and I know how exciting it is to be able to drive again. It means freedom and independence and so many things to be able to go to the store and walk up and down every aisle (while leaning on the shopping cart for support of course) looking for coupons and sales. I hope you keep seeing continued improvement from your supplements and diet change.

I just had a pm about an update re my RA...it has been 7 months now on natural medicines (high dose fish oil and herbs) and I rarely have any pain from it and very little stiffness early morning. This is summer, so maybe that helps a lot...I am dreading winter, but maybe it won't be so bad.

Fortunately no bone deformity and I have amazing stamina...work 8-12 hours a day plus lots of activity on HCW! When I get exhausted from work, one night's rest brings back all my energy in the morning.

When I went back to the Rheumatologist end of May, he was amazed at what the alternative medicine Dr. that he sent me to, when I refused the biologic stuff, had accomplished!

I would never tell someone with RA to do what I have done, because not enough time has passed, but for me it was the right decision...I don't even
have to think of side effects from biologic meds. I've only had 2 Dr.'s appts.
since January and both were good news! Before that I was going weekly and getting worse.

My only problem right now is that I re-injured my knee, so I am hobbling around, but it healed before to normal and I know it will again...just a matter of time!

Was just telling a HCW friend how supportive all who posted here were and it really made a difference on my road back to as "near normal" as it can be.

My rheumatologist referred me to Dr.Leopold at the Scripps Integrative medicine.(on my insistence, as I wanted to try natural medicines before going on biologic agents).

I totally agree with you on the effectiveness of Kaprex and Inflammasyn (Infact I saw your post while googling about these medicines to see if there are others out there trying these out). I felt so much better in the first month and could handle tasks which were hurting my low back for ages.

Integrative medicine is one of the best options for treatment of chronic conditions and I am glad I was referred there before it was too late.

fantastic! i think i need to get on fish oil at the minimum. i need to find a way that i can alieviate the pain in my fingers and the tennis elbow issue coming back. two surgeries and really all it helped was the constant pain from my elbow to my pinky.

I really hesitate to tell others to try this method, but I am so happy that you had the courage to insist on seeing Dr. Leopold and it has improved your condition.

Last week I had complex oral surgery without anesthesia... LOL I was more concerned about being off the fish oil for 2 weeks to prevent possible excessive bleeding than feeling every cut and every stitch of the surgery! Back to therapeutic dosage now and all is good!

I just want to mention that New Chapter Zyflamend is the original formula
of Inflammasyn...I didn't figure that out for several months, but now I get the Zyflamend at Sprouts or Henry's when they are B1G1.

Thank you so much for telling me about your experience ... and I hope you continue to improve! For me, it just gets better and better!!

I'm so sorry to hear your surgeries have not helped. My niece, who is like a sister to me since she is only 7 years younger, had surgery on both hands and her shoulder twice and got MRSA and had a port with antibiotics for over 6 months. And, like you, the surgery created more pain.

As if that was not enough to endure, I am so sad she now has polymyalgia rheumatica. She worked for a surgeon for several years, so knows all the best doctors, but just told me how disappointed she is that her doctor put her on prednisone and she feels worse, not better. She thinks it is affecting her heart, and of course she doesn't like the 10 lb. weight gain or the depression.

She knows that I have made so much progress using the alternatives to biologic medicines, she asked her doctor and he told her to go ahead with omega 3s and reduced the amount of prednisone. I don't know if all that surgery has done too much damage already, but we're hoping for the best.

When RA hit me so hard I was nearly crippled. Both hands were frozen out flat...I had major pain everywhere...it hit not only my joints, but all organs, too. C-reactive protein was 140. I was so weak I couldn't lift a glass. I refused to have surgery and refused biologic drugs. The rheumatoid doctor gave up on me. My whole life turned around when I started the alternative
    regimen.

I don't know what will work for others, all I can do is tell my experience, but hope you will at least explore taking fish oil. And I'll be wishing you all the best!

Update on my niece She is so much better using the same identical
fish oil and Kaprex and Zyflamend that I am taking. Her doctor told her he knew about them, so we both wonder why he didn't give her that first. He started her Prednisone at 40 now down to 5 and she's hoping to be completely off soon.
