To answer the initial question, Is it possible to break a bone and not know it? Yes, as strange as it may sound, it is very possible.
My mother slipped on a wet mat and broke her ankle on the way to her nursing school one morning. It hurt and all but she was able to get up and walk away so she thought all was okay. She went to school, took her test and her instructor MADE her go get it X-rayed... yep, broken, not only that, broken badly enough that she needed surgery and have a metal plate put in her ankle. She still has issues with pain in that ankle.
My son, age 12, was recently at a friend's house and the friend tripped over a chair and fell on my son's arm. He called me to come get him, not crying or anything, and said that he hurt his arm and just wanted to come home. When I went to get him and saw how much pain it caused him to make a fist, we took him in for X-rays. He broke both bones in his arm. I couldn't believe it! They casted him and that lasted all of 2 weeks before he BROKE his cast!! Couldn't believe that one either but.... rather than recasting him, they put him in a splint and he's got 2 more weeks to go before he can take it off.
Good luck with your foot! I hope it feels better soon!
