    Default Food Allergies

    Anyone else out there suffering?

It is so frustrating. I never even thought I couldn't eat zucchini. It has been years and never thought I had a problem. Well, I was wrong. Boy, was I wrong. Fortunately, my symptoms don't get so bad that I need to use an epi pen but I do have a horrible sore throat and mouth, and some swelling. I took my rescue treatment and hoping to feel better soon.

I have many food allergies and vegetables included do to Oral Allergy Syndrome or Food Pollen Allergies. I made a delicious zucchini cake recipe using my gluten-free flour. They were yummy. My lips felt funny right away. It didn't connect with me until this morning that Zucchini is one of the foods listed in the OAS paper the doc gave me.

So, no more zucchini for me.

My daughter has just developed a gluten intolerance. Being on a Celiac diet is expensive and frustrating. A lot of things are trial and error, although she doesn't need an epi-pen, she just has terrible stomach aches and bloating if she even looks at bread the wrong way. For a person who's main food groups were breadsticks, pizza and pasta, it's been quite a challenge.

I agree. It is even harder when you can't eat so many other foods besides wheat!! I hope this doesn't happen to her also.

There are lots more mainline brands gluten-free these days. I really haven't found a gf bread though that I really like. I only splurge occasionally on the more expensive gf foods. Did you see the IP for glutino and some others in the database?

Also, Amy's has some really great gf frozen foods. If you contact Amy's they may send you a free product coupon. They did for me.

Rbunnymom, I have oral allergy syndrome too. I think it started after college sometime because other than when I was little I did not have issues with foods. Then all the sudden I couldn't eat carrots (or even cut them up) without hives and/or throat itching/swelling, upset stomach, etc. Also I cannot eat canteloupe, bean sprouts, honeydew, bananas and a whole bunch of others. My allergist said that it is not that I am allergic to them, it's just that they share some characteristic of the other things I am allergic to--namely tree pollens esp. birch, also grass and ragweed etc. It is possible that if you have a ragweed allergy that your oral allergies are going to be worse right now because the ragweed counts have been high (at least where we live).

I can't tell you want to do--I don't know either--new stuff pops up for me all the time. It is frustrating. I told my allergist I feel like I am allergic to nature! =)

One thing though--the paper from my allergist gave me said that sometimes if a fruit has been sitting for awhile (ripening) it can reduce the oral allergy effect. So maybe if you had let the zucchini sit for awhile?? I am not sure. My doctor told me that even though I have the OAS, I can still eat carrot cake (carrots usually make me sick to my stomach) because baking it changes it so that it doesn't trigger the allergy. I have never tried it though.

I now have an epi-pen too. I doubt it would ever come to that but it is scary when new stuff just pops up all the sudden like that. My throat swelled up so bad I couldn't talk with the bean sprouts.

So anyway, just know that there is someone else out there who can relate. Hang in there!

thanks for the comments. It helps not being alone in this frustration. It is hard to eat healthy when most fruits and vegetables are like playing russian roulette. I never know when I will have a problem, ie throat swelling, etc.

I probably do need to watch it more now since my tree and grass allergies are bad with all the pollens.

Food Allergies Stink....I think I could handle the type you have though.
My Allergy is to Red Dye which is not only found in foods though toothpaste, shampoo, perfumes, drugs etc. And I know all to well that funny feeling you get in your mouth and sore throat and how you can't eat much of anything for quite a while.
I now have to keep a written log on pretty much everything I use due to the fact it may not be found under that specific name. So you may way want to google yours as well, because it may not be under that name you are commonly familiar with.

Thanks. I was told years ago that I was sensitive/allergic to yellow dye 5 and to avoid it. That is in lots also. I should look into that again as I seem to be reacting to just about everything I eat this week.

Kmmmom- Give the GF diet time. I was diagnosed Gluten Intolerant 2 years ago and it was hard at first but now it's just normal feeling.I know what to questions ask when I go out to eat and I check food lables on EVERY SINGLE thing I eat without even realizing it. Once you learn to read the labels and know what to look for you're good. It really does get easier, I promise :)

Same here Lurkergirl. It is very frustrating for me too. I want to model good eating for my kids, but there is so little I can eat without an itchy throat and ears or worse.
