My mother had this. They diagnosed it when she was an adult but realized that she probably had it all her life. She was always prone to bruising easily.

I was diagnosed in 1978 when I was 14. Did the 4 or 5 months of prednisone and then had a spleenectomy. Blood counts have been in the normal range every since. I just turned 45 this month, so 31 years so far!

Add me to the list!!! I was diagnosed in September during Hurricane Ike. We were without electricity and dressing in the dark... My husband finally saw me in the all together and was furious at the bruising and spots. He thought I was doing too much! The blood test came back with NO blood platelets and in the hospital not once, but twice. The social/case workers kept coming around asking if you had electricity at the house because they were keeping you at the hospital if you did not and needed it for your recovery. Okay, now who didn't?

Long story short... I am wheening off the steriods at 10 mg with my count at 274,000. My hope is that this was an acute case and not the chronic. We shall see!

When I was diagnosed, I put off going to the Dr. as I was just out of college, in a seasonal job and had no insurance. I finally had to go in when I couldn't take the feminine bleeding. I was in the restroom changing pads more than working (sorry, tmi, I know!). Anyway, I went in to the Dr and they did bloodwork on a Friday. Said that I'd get results on Monday. I went to work on Saturday....and by noon, my dad came to pick me up and drive me directly to the hospital. My platelet level was at 3,000. By the time I was admitted into the hospital (they had a room waiting for me) and my platelets were down to 1,000. I got the transfusion and whatnot. I did a major round of prednisone for a few months....and my levels finally leveled off at about 90,000. Apparently 90k is my "normal". I was watched closely during my pregnancies, as my hematologist ran more tests after I got insurance and found that even though my platelet levels are lower than most people's, my blood is very apt to coagulation and clots. Yippee, just what i needed, eh?
