I'm sorry about this! It's been a while since I had it but I did some research and it looks like the best thing is just rest and fluids, maybe some Tylenol. There's no treatment for it really. It goes away by itself but it will take about a month...
My 3 month pregnate sister has mono, the dr. told her to rest really not much he can do since its a virus. I have read up on it on the internet so I know it is really only spreadable through saliva, kissing, sharing drinking glasses ect. She lives next door and my kids are there constantly, just wondering if we are all going to come down with it. My DD and I have colds this morning. I think back to Christmas, lots of hugs and kisses floating around and the kids never remember whos glass is whos.
She is miserable, she broke out in some sort of hives now and can't talk much. I am praying I don't end up with 3 kids who look like that, won't be pretty. She has my mom taking care of her who has the bedside manner of a drill sergant, I need to get some things together to take to her.

More than likely you all will come down with it. She does need lots of rest but that doesn't mean she can't get up to get herself something to drink or even make a sandwich. I would take her reading material, prepared meals, healthy snacks, and pre-made drinks. Anything that doesn't require much to dp.

Ouch, Mono STINKS ROYALLY! VERY CONTAGIOUS - Be very careful because an enlarged spleen happens a lot and if it gets hit you can have internal bleeding. If shes pregnant I wouldn't let her leave the bed for at least a month
I have to agree with Billy here. Not to scare you OP, but I almost died from a bad case of mono when I was 18. I was on steroid shots because all of my organs were enlarged, I was vomiting daily for 2 months, and it was just overall very very bad. I had to drop out of college for the rest of the semester because it took about 4 months for me to heal. If she doesn't have it that bad now, chances are she won't develop a more worse case. It does need to be taken seriously though, especially if she is pregnant.Originally Posted by billythekid
Unless you were sharing beverages, or tounge kissing your sister, chances are you and your family will more than likely be ok. If any of you or your kiddos start with enlarged neck glands or extreme fatigue then would be the time to worry. It is contagious, but when I had it no one else in my dorm had it, and no one I knew had it. If you're concerned you can take the kids to the DR and have them checked- it usually shows up on a blood test. If they're not on vitamins you may want to start them on some, or up their Vitamin C just to help boost their immune system for the time being.
EDITED TO ADD: After I reread this I realized what I wrote about the kissing your sister!! What I meant to say was unless you are "tongue kissing, but it is your sister" I didn't want you to think that I thought you had "that" kind of family LOL!

All sorts of deals for all shades of green.
Check out HCW's sister site, Organic Grocery Deals. See you there!
Oh wow, thanks for the advice. I hope it doesn't turn into that, she looks horrible now though. Her dr. told her to come back if her fever goes above 102, she is about 99-100 everytime we check.Originally Posted by Kristen.C
hoping she gets well soon.

Please be sure anyone that does get it-sister included- does absolutely get their rest. In the mid '80's I missed half of my freshman year of high school and even with all the sleep then, I still have problems now.
There are MANY studies going on about mono being a trigger for Fibromyalgia. Believe me, they DO NOT want to end up where I am now, dependant on opiods and other narcotics just to get out of bed each day, on SSI for disability, etc, etc, etc. I probably spend as much time in the Dr's office as I do grocery shopping each week. (Not looking for sympathy, just trying to show how serious it can be.)
I also agree about adding vitamins to your family at least for now, and make sure all of you get enough sleep to help try to keep it away. Not sure it works, but it cant hurt and is a perfect excuse for a nap right? LOL
Didn't mean to scare anyone, just be extra careful. No one else in my family got it when I had it (5 kids then-6 now) and one sister that had it at a different time has no lasting effects whatsoever.
Stormy
Lots of rest. DH had it and we all got sick. The affects lasted for over a month. Lots of bed rest and no straining activity. Hope she feels better soon. Good Luck (((HUGS)))
