Default Anyone ever had occasional night chills/shivering???

Something happened the other night. It also happened maybe 2-3 times over the last 2 years. I woke up in the middle of the night, shivering uncontrollable. It wasn't overly cold in the house, I had a blanket, I didn't have a cold & wasn't on any medication & no other symptoms. I just woke up with my teeth chattering & uncontrollable shivering. After about 2 minutes, it went away or lessened enough that I was able to go back to sleep.

Since it is so occasional, I'm not really worried. Just curious as to what could be causing this.
    Peace, Lisa

Not sure how old you are but... early menopause?

I remember treating a malaria patient who had relapses... five years AFTER his exposure. Shivering uncontrollably was one of the signs. Even though he was treated, the type of malaria he had, (falciparum) causes the dormant parasites to resurface and the return of symptoms.

So... that being said, ... Have you been to any malaria infected countries? :P

Could you have maybe had a slight fever earlier in the day that broke, leaving you cold?

I know you said you didn't have any other symptoms, but were you sweaty at all? I went through a bout of that a couple of years ago but my chills/shivers were accompanied by sweating also. (And I never was one to sweat a lot) When I talked to the DR about it he said it could be anything from Sleep Apnea to Pneumonia, that it was quite common amont many ailments. Later on I was diagnosed with RA and that can be a side effect too. So you might want to keep an eye out for any other possible symptoms if it happens again.

I'm obviously not a doctor but if it doesn't happen a lot and nothing else seems wrong I probably wouldn't worry about it.

It can be caused by hormone changes--I always have that happen in the weeks after having a baby. I would imagine that if you had a greater than normal hormone swing this month it might cause it. Anyway, it is less scary than malaria YIKES!

I started having those a couple of years ago. I'm 48. I don't know your age, but here's a site my doctor told me about, that lists the 35 symptoms of menopause: http://www.project-aware.org/Experience/symptoms.shtml

The very first one is hot OR cold flashes!

Just got back online, sorry for the delay in responding.

Nope, no other symptoms. I don't think I had a cold that day; I checked the symptoms of early menopause & the only thing I had was thinning hair & irregular cycles (which was why I was being tested for pcos at the time I became pregnant...which of course knocked out pcos-lol). Only countries I've ever visited were Canada & Britian...no recent malaria that I've heard of-lol! No cold sweats or chills before or after.

Its only happened maybe 3 times (including 4 nights ago; I think the last time before this was probably back in January), so I'm not overly concerned. I was just curious. I've been cold before...jumping in a cold pool at Niagera Falls, went out in the snow barefoot & in shorts, that type of thing...and sure I felt a bit cold & maybe my teeth chattered for a few seconds; but it was nothing like these episodes. I felt this uncontrollable chill down to the bone & my shivering and teeth clattering was almost like minor convulsions. I'd take a deep breath and try to control the shaking & it would for a few seconds, and then start again. Went away after I put on an extra blanket, or just on its own after maybe 2 minutes (but seemed like an eternity). Has never happened when I was awake. And I'm too disoriented when awakened by this to think to take my temp or bloodpressure. And after it happened I fell back into a sound sleep.

I'm not really worried...unless it happens again, so soon after the last time. I was just wondering what could have caused this. I find it very strange.
    Peace, Lisa

I still vote hormones. Pregnancy does weird things to a body.

The teeth chattering shivering happened to me both times right after delivery. The nurses said it is very common after delivery. Maybe hormones
