Default Just a comment on the overall lower prices at the Commissary

Sometimes I take for granted the overall lower prices at our commissary. Well, maybe "take for granted" isn't the right phrase, but I guess sometimes I don't realize just HOW MUCH lower they are. Just a couple examples....reg price of a gallon of milk at the commissary is 2.56. At Shaws it is $4.99!

Every couple weeks or so, I pick up a Tyson ready to heat rotisserie chicken at the commissary for 3.99 before any coupon I may have. I happened to notice them at Shaw's today.... $6.29 is the regular price!!!

I'm going to be so sad when our commissary closes in 2011.

Yep. My mom says the same thing.

I put together her grocery lists and go with her. I have always told her to appreciate the prices.

She got sticker shock when she went to Food Lion. The Green Giant veggies that are about .75 at the comm are 1.99 on the outside.

We tried really hard to babyproof our house, but somehow, a couple of them still got in.

What commissary do you shop at? We buy organic milk and it is $3.69 at the commissary before surcharge. I can buy it at Giant for $3.09. We go through at least five half gallons a week so the difference really adds up. The more I comparison shop the more discouraged I get at our commissary. They may be a cent or two cheaper, but, once the surcharge is added it's more.

Now meat, that's a different story. I always get better prices there.

At Ft Belvoir, a gallon of 2% is about $2.50. When we moved here in June '06 it was $1.58! We thought the price was for a 1/2 gallon. At Barksdale before we moved it was $3.00.
At Safeway here I think it is almost $4 a gallon.

Milk is $3/gallon at our commissary and Safeway has been running sales almost every week for $3/gallon. But, you are right as far as this commissary is concerned, the commissary's prices beat the "regular" prices in town almost all the time. When I need something, I get it from the commissary. Butter at King Soopers is $4.69 when I last looked (the two brands we buy) and it was $2.39 at the commissary.

this is how i shop i prettymuch know what i buy and if i need it i know it's cheaper at the commisary. If for some odd reason it's on sale somewhere else and i can stock up on it I do but my comparison for "sale" is the reg commisary price
i could belive walmart had milk 4.29 a gal!

however i am seeing that casco has about the same price as the commisary per lb in the meat section and i think it's better quality so i have been shoping at the commisary less and less since i moved to ca.

Gee, I think our commissary is high. Milk is as high as elswhere, almost 4$ a gallon and prices on most stuff I buy just skyrocketed at the comm. Pop tarts are 1.79 for a small box, bacon which had always been 2.39 is now 3.39. I am hoping it is a temp. price jump and not permanent but that is a huge jump from the reg. high price, not the sale price. The 2.39 was always the reg. price and I would wait and buy it at 1.89 on sale. But 3.39? Walmart, which I hate, sells koolaids, capri-suns, lipton tea and other stuff cheaper on a regular basis. Bottled water at the commissary is .89 a jug at the cheapest but everywhere else it is .64. I get some things there but if prices continue to go up, I will have to do less and less shopping at the commissary.

The main thing I miss the commissary for, is fresh produce and meat prices! I used to get all kinds of fruits and veggies, also lots of varieties of fresh meat, when we lived at Fort Knox. Here, I pretty much just get the basics (apples, grapes, bananas; chicken breasts, ground beef, pork chops). :(
