It depends on the exclusions on the coupons. But most of the ones issued by Michael's limit you to using 1 coupon per customer per day. At least that is the verbiage on the ones I have on hand.

Actually you can use the "bonus" coupons, such as the 15% off Bead Gallery coupon in the same transaction using the 50% off coupon. They cannot be used on the same item however.
For example, if you purchase 2 strands of beads at their regular price of $6.99 50% would come off one strand and 15% would come off the other.
"Bonus" coupons are ones that specifically discount a particular type of item such as beads, picture frames, bake ware, etc. These coupons can be used on the same transaction with one 40% or 50% off regular priced item coupon,(again, just not on the same item. )
    ( I know this because I work at Michael's )

What is the policy regarding returning merchandise that a coupon was applied to? Say I bought an item using a (rare!) 50% off coupon and returned it within the same week, so the coupon is still considered valid. I'm assuming I'd only be refunded for the discounted price, but what is the fate of my still-good coupon? Would they honor that 50% discount on something else even though I don't have another physical coupon, since I turned it in with my last purchase? Or am I out one hefty discount just because I didn't think my purchase through beforehand...? >_<

Hmmm...that's a good question. But I don't know the answer. I'll have to call and find out.

It is Corporate Policy that once a coupon has been used that's it. HOWEVER, it is the discretion of store's manager of whether to adhere to policy. In our store, if you talk to the manager beforehand and explain the situation, more often than not, the manager will find a way to get you that discount again, as long as that particular coupon was still in effect.
