I just added the Laura Lean deal to the wiki and wanted to say to those of you who think that the leaner meat is too expensive. I’ve found that I can use less of the leaner ground beef and still end up with the same amount if not more meat after cooking than cheaper fattier meat.

I use 10-12 ounces of leaner meat in meals that usually require 1 full pound of regular ground beef all of the time. I even drop down to 8 ounces (½ pound) for dishes that are not all meat, like hamburger helper and chili. This makes each pound stretch farther than what I can do with the fattier stuff. So when I calculate the unit price of meat I calculate by the actual amount I use per meal instead of per pound. When the leaner meat is on sale the unit price (per meal) can be the same or cheaper than fatty ground beef.

Example; 1 pound of Laura’s Lean is $2.99 with coupon. That’s about $.19 per ounce. If I only use 12 ounces in the place of 1 pound of less quality stuff it would be the equivalent of $2.28 per pound.

So I buy only leaner stuff now. What I find on sale and buy the most is ground round. I’m always thrilled to find ground sirloin though, I usually find it reduced for quick sale. If I’m disparate I’ll buy ground chuck but I eyeball it really well.

I've used the Laura's coupon on the service case meat before.. it says Laura's Lean Beef on the label they print... it will beep and they will have to override it.. but you can use it!
