I would call it a Superbowl ad.
I never met a coupon I did not like.

And really there isn't anything interesting in it. It always cracks me up when they advertise things in their "saturday" sale and it really is no different than their regular week ad. Who knows...what do I know...I definitely did NOT get my degree in marketing!!

I think the ground round is an awesome deal at $2.49 a pound. I bought three pounds of ground round a few weeks ago when it was on sale for $2.29 a pound. I’ve always bought cheap ground beef in the past because I felt I couldn’t afford the better stuff, and then it got to where the cheap stuff wasn’t so cheap any more.

Then the other day while browsing for markdowns and noticing the ground round on sale it hit me. I’m used to preparing meals with one pound of cheap ground beef. But lower quality ground beef renders a lot of fat and the amount you’re left with after cooking is no where near a full pound anymore. I decided to start thinking of my meat portions as meal units instead of pounds, sort of like pricing laundry detergent by how many loads a bottle will do instead of how many ounces it contains. If I could get the same cooked portion from twelve ounces of ground round that I get from one pound of regular ground beef, then why not do it if it’s cheaper.

So, three pounds of ground round which normally would equal three meals, at $2.29 a pound is $6.87 and is a total of forty-eight ounces. Forty-eight ounces divides evenly into four twelve ounce meal portions, so $6.87 divided by four meals is $1.72 a meal and is in a way equivalent to $1.72 a pound of the cheap stuff.

I do on occasion find regular ground beef on sale cheaper than $1.72 a pound but not often, and ground round is so much better quality and healthier. It didn't render any grease at all. I was so impressed that I decided to take my idea a step further; I would use twelve ounces for meat only dishes like taco meat and sloppy Joe, but try getting by with only eight ounces for dishes only containing meat like chili and hamburger helper. Perhaps there is a little less meat in my chili now but it’s not noticeable. So I guess the meat portion for some meals would only be $1.15.

Sorry for rambling, just thought I would share my idea.

I do the same thing mk. I dont buy just ground beef any longer. For 1 the taste leaves me unhappy. Something about it, just doesnt taste good anymore. 2nd there was sooo much fat being dumped off of it that half of my meat was gone. So I only buy ground round or better now. Yes I pay for it, but when I find it on special or on markdown I stock up on it. To me a better cut of meat is worth it. So I will spend more on meat to get better quality.
