Meijer ~ Other: Meijer marked down meat...watch the pricing!!!

Today, my husband and I went to Meijer to pick up some of the ground chuck that's on sale for $1.69. (He doesn't like to use what's in the freezer for burgers on the grill....he likes fresh better).

While we were there, he found a package of ground beef that had the "Special Savings" sticker on it.

Original price per pound $2.29
Weight 6.45 pounds
Price $14.77

The "special savings" sticker said:
20% off
You pay $11.82

So far...this is right.

BUT....

then it says, new price per pound $1.35

The store was crowded, I didn't have a calculator with me, and we were in a hurry to get home before the school bus got here. The price per pound looked good...better than the sale price on the ground chuck...so we bought it.

MISTAKE! And I should have known better!

Yes, the new price was correct at $11.82
But, if it was actually $1.35/lb (as it also states!), it should have only cost $8.71

We saved the receipt and the wrapper (in a ziploc bag) and we're going back tomorrow to talk to someone. I know, I should have figured it out...but I also know that I shouldn't have to! My husband says it's deceptive labeling...and I tend to agree with him!

Clearly $1.35 is not 20% off of $2.29, so I think you paid the right amount. They just can't do math. LOL.

You're right. The price I paid is clearly 20% off the original price. However, if it hadn't been marked $1.35/lb, I never would have looked at it. The meat I had planned to buy was $1.69/lb.

I know...I'm a bad shopper. (I'm usually much smarter than this!) I should have figured it out, and bought what I planned to buy in the first place. I'm sure alot of people will understand when I say that I was in a hurry, and didn't take the time to figure it out.

My main point of posting about this was to warn other Meijer shoppers to just base their purchase on the price per pound.

I've been a hurry when I've come across this too and I thought it didn't all add up either. This was quite a while ago, and I just forgot about it. I also have wondered about the chickens at the deli when they are 40%- those don't seem to add up- like when they're on sale that week. They should be 40% off the sale price, but they probably just don't want to change the price.

Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. I noticed it while still there and took it to the counter to be re-stickered. He thought everything was fine so I had to point out how the price per pound didn't add up.
