CHAT Meijer NuVal: Does it affect what you buy?

NuVal Nutritional Scoring

I've noticed a lot more of these numbers in the store lately and it is making me think about what I'm buying. I haven't changed my habits yet though.

I've been trying to eat more fresh fruits and veggies since I could stand to use a few pounds. Or twenty. What do you think? Do you see the NuVal number on items you are going to buy and then change your mind??

Interesting, I must be living in a cave as I had never heard of this and don't recall seeing any of these in stores. I will pay more attention now.
I really do read labels and I am trying really hard to make better nutritional purchases.
The Meijer Natural products contain less chemicals some are really high in salt. Then I started buying more organics till I realized they are not necessarily better for you, one rice dish I purchased had 23% of your daily salt requirement and to me that does not scream healthy at all. Got to read labels.

A lady I work with only buys organics and she spends $700 per month for 2 people, she said some months are higher. Wow.

If the system works then yes I would think it is a great idea and it would influence what I purchase.

I've seen them, but I'm a list-sticker! I write a very detailed list (coordinated with the ad, my coupons and the great deals everyone posts here!), and I just don't stray from it too often. Unless, of course, I see a great deal or clearance item while I'm shopping.

I know in my heart that I should pay better attention to the nutritional value (because I have that same 20...plus a few!!...to lose), but my heart wants what my wallet can't provide!

They are on the tag on the shelf. A number in a little circle or square or something. Not every product has them yet. They've been adding them slowly but surely and I've been seeing a lot more of them popping up. I agree with Xufan, wallet vs what's good for you... I'm not going to make a change overnight, but the numbers are making me rethink what I buy and I've very slowly started adjusting it. Things like milk and fruits and veggies. Going back to cooking from scratch seems to be the best way to go...

I actually don't pay attention to them at all. I find that my gut (and wallet) usually guides my choices. I did weight watchers for years, so I have a pretty good idea how to read labels, but at the end of the day I'm like XUFan, I focus more on my list and less on the numbers. Every once in a while I find something that has a number that doesn't even come close to where I would guess it would be. If that's the case, I might stop and take an extra look? Depends on how my two hooligans are acting

Yes, it has affected my purchases. When I saw what a low number (4 out of 100) the Kraft Easy Mac had I decided to pass it by even though it was a pretty good deal. I still shop the deals, but I decided that if the number is too low it's a higher cost my family will pay nutritionally. If there's a choice between product A and product B and they are the same price, I will choose the one with the hight NuVal. It's encourged me to buy more fresh produce as well.

I hate those tearpads advertising the NuVal scores! Every aisle I see them and think - ooh! a tearpad coupon. Only to be disappointed again and again:sad:.

But to the original question, we started trying to eat "cleaner" a year or so ago, and we don't eat a lot of processed foods to start, so I haven't really changes my habits. I do find the numbers interesting though and I like that Meijer is trying to promote healthy food choices!

Those tearpads irritate me too!

Mainly because they remind me that chips and dip are NOT a nutritionally sound meal.

It hasn't changed my food habits ...but we don't eat super unhealthy as it is. I do weigh too much but my problems come more from loving to cook and portion control issues and avoiding my gym more than I should!
I have to admit I do judge other's carts in the check out... I know it's bad and I shouldn't because I have my own issues but I have to admit I do it. I see someone with sugar cereals, and pop tarts and fried chicken and frozen pizza and mac and cheese and just tons of complete crap in their carts and I think ... how digusting ... do they have any idea what they are doing to their bodies! Even worse they feed that garbage to their kids on a routine basis ... we have friends whose kids get pop tarts and sugar cereal pretty much every day for breakfast ... super yuck!
