Meijer ~ Other: Meijer-Does the cashiers phone ever ring when you get up to the register??

I went in to Meijer yesterday only armed with 2 carts and maybe 60 or so coupons. Not a big deal. I usually have much more. Anyway, after getting all my stuff, I proceed to the checkout. There were 2 people in front of me. As the first person leaves the next guy steps up. Then the phone rings. I notice a manager standing like 15 feet behind me. Then out of the corner of my eye I spot another manager (* side note- I was amazed to see one manager let alone 2). Now I am paranoid. Don't get me wrong, I never use coupons the wrong way, it justs takes longer because now I make them go super slow when scanning coupons. It was like that paranoid feeling you get when you are driving along and all of a sudden a cop has gotten behind you. (That isn't just me, right) I thought that they were all staring at me. It turns out that they were after the guy in front of me. Anyway, when I got to the cashier she was explaining to me what happened. Apparantly, if the phone rings when you are at the checkout, it is another cashier or a manager warning the cashier about the customer. She said it is usually because of coupons. This guy rips the expiration dates off and looks for peelies that don't say what the product is and then tries to use them for other things. I also think that this was the guy who stole my coupon binder a few years ago and took off running. But that is another thing.

I remember one time that a phone rang when I got to the register. That was a day that I had done like 12 transactions though. It isn't my fault, I have to travel a good distance to Meijer so I only get there once a week. Has this happened to any of you?

i dont usually shop at meijer but i have had this happen at Kroger... That's intresting. Hmmm...

I have had their phones ring when I've been checking out, but it doesn't seem to effect anything. The conversation doesn't seem to be about me (cashier on phone doesn't look my way or anything...but then again maybe they're trained not to look then!) and I've not had trouble with my coupons after such a phone call.
Hmm. I'll have to pay more attention next time it happens!

It happened to me once a few years ago. Apparently store employees were watching the woman in front of me because she continually tried to use coupons that didn't match what she was purchasing.

This doesn't happen to me..I know most of the cashiers out-and-out hate me, with the rare exception of a few. The managers ALL hate me at my regular store and consider me a thief. Not very coupon friendly, though I do always play by the rules. They just hate that I KNOW the rules and am not afraid to call them on their shenanigans.

Ususally for me, it's the other way around- the cashier picking up the phone to call out.

I've only had that happen to me once, but it was the shift leader talking to the cashier about her break.

Not at Meijer...but once at CVS I got the life scared out of me. I had gone through the store, gathering my deals and matching coupons to them. I got to the register, and there was only one person ahead of me. They were almost done with their order. A cashier walks up and says to the girl on the register...."Call Bill. He said to call him down when she got here." Yikes!! What did I do???? So, I stepped up to take my turn. I handed her my card, and the phone rang. It was the manager. My heart is beating faster now. And then she said, "Bill, your wife just got here. Should I send her up?" And there she was...his wife...standing behind me!! LOL!

I asked my favorite cashier today about the phone calls. She said the calls are generally about something else. But if there is a problem customer or a known "bad couponer" (her words) then the cashier will get a warning call. Funny enough though, today when I was in doing 3 transactions, the phone rang. I asked her if it was for me, so said no, it was about her break. We got a good laugh. It was right after we had discussed the whole phone thing. I have lucked out and found a great cashier and look for her every time. She is a fellow couponer. I try to keep my transactions down to three. I go to one store, then if I need to do more, I go a few miles away to another, then I hit the first one again on my way home if I have to. This way, I am kinda under the radar. I don't want to generate a call.

wow.hmm.I was meijer a wk ago & when this old couple were paying,the phone rang and then the cashiers attitude changed completely,it was odd.(I was holding my coupons at the time too)I just assumed she had been told to stop chit chatting so much with the customers,since she'd been holding me up.But who knows, all i know is that I didn't do anything wrong.Maybe meijer is becoming more paranoid of all couponers? I'm not a fan of meijer at all,so if I have any trouble I just won't shop there.who needs the extra stress?? not us couponers! lol
