But you would have the chocolate cafe and silver beach and the huge new pavillion downtown and a pretty good library ... it's a great town ... I have a lot of family that lives there. Silver beach has a lot of history in this area... up until about the 1950's it was where all the money in Chicago would boat across the lake and party. The amusement park was one of the biggest attractions in the midwest.. It didn't close until the 70's but was pretty down trodden by than ... at the turn of the century and just afterwards it was the place to be in the midwest... in the last 5-10 years the city has poured a lot of money into recreating the area.. and the Venetian Festial is a not to be missed yearly event. Also if you do any family history at all there is a really strong local genelogical group ... St. Joseph has a huge farming industry with all the fruit farms in the area... and a lot of the local midwest was settled by families that first came into the area from Chicago... there is a really strong connection between Chicago and St. Joseph and they have several guest speakers yearly come because of the historical genelogical connections of the area. It's a pretty unique strong city with a lot of history esp. for it's size!!
