I knew this stuff happened in the past (I heard about stock brokers requiring husbands' signatures before allowing the wife to invest), but I didn't think this still went on.

Mike...you might be surprised at just how often this kind of stuff goes on. Clearly some men still need to be 'enlightened' as to the competence, intelligence and versatility of some women when it comes to areas that have traditionally been handled by men.

I've actually never had it happen to me. Maybe its my demeaner or just dumb luck.

Here is something I learned when I first went to work for a mortgage reporting company. This was the early 80's & laws had only recently been changed (mid 70's I think).

You are a single professional woman. A lawyer. You have excellent credit. You have mc, visa (no discover at this time-lol). Around 35, you get married. You change your name and all of your credit now goes into your dh's name. But a year later, you find you married a real deadbeat & divorce him. But now you have no credit. Your husband has your good, previously established credit. You have to reapply to every credit card you had.

This was told to me by several managers at my job. Thats one reason we had to verify each credit entry so carefully...to make sure it was for the right person.

I wonder what the guy at the hardware store is going to say when I go in there tonight needing a new hot water tank and install - if they ask me if I need my hubby, I might consider having to whack someone with my purse (wait, I don't carry a purse!!!). But the visual image works for me.

I have had some problems with a few mechanics over the years who have treated me like I wasn't very bright. Thank goodness not all mechanics act that way.

10 years ago almost- I was one of 3 females in all of Pittsburgh who were car salesmen. No one ever asked for a sales person so I was a sales man. Some times people would not bother to listen to me until I said "I am a sales man. I just have a really high voice. You can call me Danny if you like." I would tell people on the phone "I'm the easy one to spot, noone else is in a skirt." When we were trained they told us to ask if there was anyone else they needed to consult before you really started spending a lot of time with them. I know they they only meant women but I would ask the guys that too. I know that was what sealed the deal. These guys didn't want me to think they had to consult the little lady so they drove off in a new truck!
Does Lowe's work on commission? If so I would go in and find a woman to sell you the flooring. You need to make sure the guy is working.
