Wow- cool info!! Thanks, repping ya!
Have you tried this at other Lowe's stores, or is this the same one that your grandma used or uses? Just wondering if this is the same at all Lowe's or not... Where are you located, BTW?
Mod Note: As of 05/31/11 Lowes still does this, but sometimes no orange stripe on the bag.
Not sure if you all know, but if you go to the back of the garden center & you see ripped bags or bags with an orange stripe on it (they can't sell them for full price) and if you just go the gardening center manager and tell him/her how many you want they wil give you a price for them. (I do it all the time) soil, fertilizer, rocks, mulch you name it. My green thumb grandma taught me this trick!
This past weekend I picked up 20 bags of mulch with a stripe for 3.00 dollars!![]()

... from a good ol' Kentucky girl!
Check out my avatar-- my sweet tortie Annie is not fond of cameras, so this is an online look-a-like! Ain't she a cutie?
Man, I wish I knew about this yesterday! I just had to buy a bag of the black mulch for 4.97. Darnit. Maybe I'll go and see if I can get some more for the front beds. Thanks!!![]()
Thought for the Day:
Handle every stressful situation like a dog.
If you can't eat it or play with it,
Just pee on it and walk away.
I live in volusia county Fl. But I used to live in Orange County for 5 yrs. & I did it there too!!
Plus my grandma lives in Jacksonville, where she does it.
I have a friend who lives in GA who also does it.
And I even head over to Homes Depot as well after I buy what I can at Lowes. (somebody has to take all those ripped bags!)
Great info... thanks! Now I just need to find LOTS of ripped bags of black mulch, as I'd love to get 20 bags for $3.00. Do you do much negotiating with the manager or simply ask him/her how much they'll take for the X ripped bags? To go from the $4/bag down to $0.15/bag is a heck of a discount and am curious as I probably would have said 'yes' to $2/bag (depending on how much had spilled out).
Volusia County... I lived there for ~10 years.
YAY Volusia County!![]()
Now where do you live?
Back to the subject, they usually just want to get these bags off the lot.......and they go for very cheap, whatever he/she feels like offering. I've had them tell me to pull my truck around back and they would fill it up....Great serviceand cheap. It's almost like your doing them a favor.:shrug7:
And sometimes when I go and theres no bags "marked"
I just ask who marks the bags and when will they be doing it.......sometimes they do all of there markings one day a week depending on how many they have to do.![]()
I can't wait to see if this works the same in Luzerne County, PA
TYVM, repped you!
Mom of 3 sibling rivals!
it works at all locations..and Home Depot too...that is how I get my cheap dirt and stuff all the time
OK< I am armed. Orange stripe, torn bag = cheap stuff. Got it thanks so much.
I am living in a rental and it sooooo needs new mulch.
Thanks
