using coupons on clearance items?

On Wednesday, I bought (2) bags of Nestle DarkChoc & Mint chips. They were clearanced to $1.20 a bag. I had $1/2 coupon -- which the cashier asked the accountant/asst mgr if we could accept the coupon.

This person told the cashier YES but that they'd have to override it b/c the register wouldn't recognize the sale. (Clearanced items at LF have a red clearanced tag that the cashiers scan)

After baking with the chips Wed night, I decided I wanted more to freeze for Christmas.

I returned Friday. I had (6) more $1/2 coupons, thus I bought 12 bags.

I told the cashier that the coupons would need an override but that I had been in there on Wed and was told they would be accepted.

The cashier went to double check. The manager happened to be standing there and told her "No... we do NOT take coupons on reduced merchandise"

Has anyone heard this rule before?

I calmly explained what I had been told on Wednesday. The manager told me he was not happy that my coupon had been accepted on Wednesday AND that he would accept my coupons today BUT would never allow this to happen again.

"Not taking coupons on reduced merchandise" -- is that part of LF's coupon policy?

I think you would have to ask the mod-Ummm. I know I have to get a override at HT and I have never had a problem there but LF I'm not sure about.

Yes, you are supposed to be able to use coupons on clearanced items. Yes, it needs an override. Been there, done that with my local Lowes manager.

Really, it is win-win for both of you. He moves out the clearanced stuff faster, you get a good deal. They don't want that clearanced stuff hanging around and they reimbursed for the coupon.

I had seen the morsels you speak of on close out, they weren't actually with a seperate barcode, I even was going to get some but I had no coupons.

I have been to one HT that had that same rule, I swear it is because they just don't want to have to walk over and override it. BUT I guess if they are going to DOUBLE a coupon that might make sense that they wouldn't accept the coupon(since they loose the doubled portion), even though in this case yours was not going to be doubled. But where do you they draw the line? "We can accept coupons on clearance items as long as they are coupons that won't double." Great I am probalby giving them a new rule to add.

So I guess I don't know the definative answer to your question. Write LF and ask what the policy is concerning your specific transaction.

Here is the official stance of the store manager at my Lowes Food-

If the product is marked down, and moved to the special "clearance" section, and has been re-labeled with a white sticker...No coupons.
However, if the product is still on the shelf and there is a clearance "tag" on the shelf, I CAN use a coupon.
Confusing. But I don't really mind. I usually want the stuff that is on clearance on the shelves anyway ;-)
Oh, and I'm sure this is that particular store manager's theory. I don't feel like that's how it works everywhere.

That's what I was thinking.
I truly got the impression b/c I was taking so many was the reason he "allowed it this once time". Who else was going to buy 12 bags of an item that didn't sell??

They do not allow coupons on clearance at my store. They even have a sign by the clearance rack. I think it is a strange policy.

I have used coupons on clearance items at my store with no problems in the past but I would not be surprised if I went in today and they said no.

I've never had a problem using coupons on clearance items, however, I can't remember the last time I did that. My LF never has any good clearance. It's usually dog/cat food.
