I Picked the Garbage & Found. . .

Oh yikes, I was just re reading the story about the vase and the people moving. And it reminded me of once back almost 20 years ago when we were moving, My son was helping and left two of his boxes outside of the car by the trunk waiting for me to open it. I must have got distracted, the trash trucks came, and poof, there went his two boxes. They were far from the trash so I couldn't figure out why they would have picked it up. So maybe someone else was driving by and mistook it for trash? Anyway, we were both heartbroken, because in one of the boxes were all his sports trophies, his prized sports autograph collection, and (the worst for me) his baby book. Like I said, that was almost 20 years ago and there is still a hole in my heart having lost that baby book. :( So be careful what you're picking on trash day is actually trash.

i wont touch it unless it is at the curb with the rest of the cans. and it has to be right with it or on top of them.....otherwise it is always good to knock and ask

Those kitty litter buckets are what we use at Girl Scouts to make "sit upons" They are what you use to put all your supplies in for camping. (flashlight, mess kit, etc)
You decorate the outside and glue a small pillow to the top.
I use mine on all of our camping trips. this way you have somewhere 2 sit when by the fire and everything you need is right there with you.

oldest dd is old enough for girl scouts this year....looks like i will be going by her house every week looking for more of these! hmm...might even have to say something to them if i see the residents and ask for them. i could collect enough for her whole new troop to do these for camping. then we could sew our own pillows for the top.

I remember my dd making sit upons, and all they made was the pillow lol. What a great idea that is to incorporate the bucket. And they are recycling/upcycling at the same time!

We made our own pillows for the top. These really are SOOOO useful. My daughter is no longer in scouts due to some local probs but we still use the situpons all the time!!We camp alot and they are so handy. I just make sure to restock missing items when we return home and then all we have to do is grab for next trip.
When we first made these we gave girls a list of the items that you needed in it ( flashlight, wipes, water bottle , spray ,etc) One very super organized girl scout printed a copy of list out and laminated it to her situpon. She said that way she always had a check list and would always have everything she needed. Super great idea. All her idea (not mommas) and she was 9!
And yes we used it has part of our recycling badge. It also was included on camping , craft and sewing badges. Oh and first aid cuz we made mini first aid kits to keep in them.

well didnt have to pick the garbage for this one!!

neighbors knocked at door last night "hey got two wicker rockers you want them"....me "sure" since i had already ispy'd them by their garbage. they got a new rocker and didnt need these. came with two cushions...oh yeah did i say they are in perfect condition!! dd's each have one and they sat on the deck last night and rocked.

and my buckets: 1 is full of squirrel corn on the cobs, 1 is bird food, the last one is on the deck with odds and end plastic toys (and it's second use is for my glass of soda!!)....will check back for more of these buckets. the lids lock on them!! whoo hoo. dh has a box full of these glass rocks he uses to make arrow heads and i spy them in these containers!!!

Saw lots of stuff on the curb over the memorial day weekend. Only took home a few things though cause most I just couldn't use. I got a very nice little pic frame and a nice brushed nickle metal desk lamp...oh and a little plastic shelf to help out with my stockpile stuff. Another thing that I saw but couldn't use was a completely full brand new jug of cat litter. Even had a coupon on it... I took the q (just in case) and left the jug (don't have a cat) ;)

got my eye on two wood (like those super heavy wood ones that ship stuff overseas you see on the tv with guns in them) boxes down the street. been near (i say near not at ) the curb on their driveway for two days. i keep trying to see if i can see the people that live there so i can ask them.

dh is like "what do you need them for"...and i am like "they are wood. put some polyurethane on them and make a cool top and they are great. or just use the wood for another project (oh say a bird house or 8)

My sis and I use to go dumpster diving and garbage picking all the time. We would then have yard sales and make $100s. It was so much fun...sure do miss it. big sigh

While looking for inserts the only good thing I have found is an uncut All You magazine. It was recent too! That was my first Dumpster Dive so I was pretty happy to have found that along with inserts.
