Coupons not accepted on clearance items?

So here's the story I got this morning. Found a $1 wholly gucamole and had a $1.50 coupon. I asked the friendly cashier if they adjust the coupon...it was the only item I was buying. He said "I was told not to accept coupons on clearance items". I looked at him funny and replied that I had NEVER had a problem with coupons on clearance items. It's always worked for me. What the story on this? A misinformed cashier?

It really comes down to the manager and the cashier.
Some stores won't let me use coupons, so I stopped shopping that stores clearance.

I had that happen to me one time, but I think it was just the cashier. I have shopped at that store since and not had anyone bat an eye when I use a coupon on manager specials.
