    QUESTION Kroger vs Walmart? Prices?

Ok, so we have done most of our shopping at Walmart in the past (there is one convenient to our home). But, I know that Kroger double coupons (and I'm not even sure Walmart accepts manufacturers coupons). There is a Kroger nearby us as well.

And I know that Walmart never has "sales" since they use "everyday low pricing." So, generally speaking, is it cheaper to shop for groceries at Kroger with double coupons, or Walmart?

I know that a lot of items at Krogers are more expensive - a good example is Glaceau Vitamin Water. At Kroger I think the regular price is 1.25 each, while at Walmart it is 1.00 every day. Kroger has them on sale for 5/$5, making them $1 each as well. But, this is sale price at Kroger, and a regular price at Walmart.

As I said, I'm speaking in generalities here as I know scenarios will change depending on the item(s). Any help?

Well...I shop Kroger, Wal-Mart, and Publix every week since they are all within a couple miles.

I've never done price-matching at Wal-Mart, so I'm not exactly sure how that works, but with the exception of a few items, I find shopping at Kroger to be a lot cheaper. The double coupons and sale prices are great. Not to mention the fact that (at least in this area) the shopping experience is a MILLION times better.

The items that I know will be cheaper at Wal-Mart I just pick up there when I'm doing non-grocery shopping. They do take mfg coupons, and I rarely have any issues with overage/trial sizes, etc. (though I don't buy many per transaction :-))

Generally, I think Kroger sales are much cheaper than Walmart. I have a friend who was told by several Kroger "higher ups" that having lower daily prices than Walmart was Kroger's new goal. I think they are about there.

I will go against the grain and say that I think Kroger's prices are more expensive, significantly on some items. I have often found Kroger's sale prices to be the same as Walmart's regular prices. I will say, however, that Kroger doubling coupons makes those items at least equal to if not less than Walmart's price. Obviously, if something is on sale and I have a coupon, the price is virutally unbeatable!

I have to agree with AHabart. Kroger's prices aren't that great, even with the sales. Double coupons are great and all, but overall you'd probably do better using coupons at Walmart than at Kroger.

Now, every month or two Kroger runs a good promo that usually ends up being really good. But, other than those sales, I don't really shop at Kroger at all.

Do you have a Publix? IMO, Publix is the best. I get tons of stuff for free.

Unfortunately we do not have Publix in East TN. My mom used to live in FL and Publix are big down there. I always thought their prices were very good when I visited.

From what I've heard, non-grocery items (including laundry detergent and toiletries) are more expensive at groceries stores than at Walmart. That seems to be what I'm hearing here.

Thanks for all the help guys!

No but, if you are in Far east TN 1st: Check out the Kroger Mid-east group. 2nd: You have Whites (They have good prices, but, remind me of Kroger.), Ingles, Food City, and a few others. Their used to be a Publix in Johnson City. But, it left about 15 years ago. And it was apparently super small. I haven't shopped in the far east TN area in a long time. But, if you are in the Tri-Cities area. You have multiple options.

And if you are in Wal-mart anyhow (I'm sorry,), they price match.

I save much more money by not stepping foot into a wal-mart. My average price for laundry detergent is .07 a load if i used the manufacturers recommendations. Most of the time i get my detergent at CVS. I will only go to walmart if its a free item, that i want multiple of, period.

In the begining, I shopped both Walmart and Kroger. I believe that Kroger tends to have a higher everyday price on most things, but their sale/promo prices and manager specials combined with doubled manufacturer prices AND the fuel perks are what keeps me shopping there. (Also, we don't have a Super Walmart very close to us...lol) Now that I have a good stockpile on most things, I can afford to wait for a great sale at Kroger.

Anyway - I typically will hit up Walmart when I'm either close by and have time to waste, want to look for some rumored clearance items, or it's the end of the month and I want to use my almost expired q's for trial size freebies. I've studied sales prices for the past 6 months and know my max that I'm willing to pay for certain items, so it helps me know what is a good deal at Kroger or elsewhere.
