    SMILE I love Kroger's Scan-Right Guarantee!

    Just had to share...

Sometimes when I shop at Kroger, the item I'm buying rings up at the wrong price. But I don't actually see that as a bad thing because of the Scan-Right Guarantee.

That's basically the store policy on items that ring up at the wrong price.

So the basic policy at Kroger is a 200% guarantee, so if an item is rung up at the wrong price, you get your money back (100%) AND the item for free (another 100% for a total of 200% of the value back).

So tonight I needed a new pie plate because DH broke mine using it as a container for lit charcoal at Thanksgiving (don't ask). So I ran over to Kroger because it's the closest grocery to my house. They had the basic Pyrex one for $3.87 but then a slightly bigger, fancy one with the scallopped edge marked at Closeout price of $4.99. I thought an extra buck would be OK for the nicer plate. But when I got to the register, it rang up at the regular $9.99 price. So I paid (more on why below) and then took my receipt to the CS counter. The lady there sent someone to check the price on the shelf. Once she confirmed I was telling the truth and that the item was indeed marked at $4.99 she refunded my whole purchase and I got to take the pie plate home for free. Yipppeeee!!!!

The one caveat here is that you have to PAY for the item at the wrong price and then go back to CS for your refund. If you simply tell the cashier while you're still in the middle of your transaction, then you don't get anything. I presume this is so that the store is aware of the error and can correct it before someone else gets another item for free. But still. If this ever happens to you, it's totally worth the trip to the CS desk if you have a few minutes. Just thought I'd share. Maybe others could use that info!

One problem...my stores act like they know NOTHING about the other 100% part of the 200 you mentioned. They simply give me the amount that was overcharged, send me on my way, and I never even get a "sorry" out of their mouth! I have looked for the official Scan-Rite policy online but do not seem to find it. The store does not have it hanging anywhere. Also, I think there is a dollar limit on the error.

    Anyone have a link??

Hmmm. I just tried to find it and couldn't either. It's been awhile since I actually looked but I believe it's stated on the signs inside the front doors? Where the carts are?

I've not noticed it in the store either and then the other day I saw it on my way inside. The store had 2 doors in and out and it was up on the window, facing outside, in between the doors.

Yes I have definitely benefited from this before! The last time though, she wanted to only refund me the difference because the item had just been stocked in the wrong place. I said that I could understand that if there had been 1 or 2 items in the wrong place, but there was a whole shelf full. So she called a manager and they told her to give it to me.

I've asked about this at my store when I've had issues with being overcharged and was told that they had no such policy. Next time I'm there you can bet I'm gonna look on the doors for the policy. Thanks for the info.

My store has only refunded me the difference as well. I'll be sure and look in store to see if it's posted around the doors. I usually walk by without paying attention to anything.

Interesting. I have gotten my money back before, but I didn't know you had to pay first to get it. I did the self scan the other day and my raspberries rang up for $3.99 even though they were on sale for $2.49! I told the self scan clerk and she just changed it to the right price. I wondered why she didn't offer it for free, but I was in a rush and didn't even mess with asking CS. Usually I don't use the SCO and I am busy sorting my coupons into the order I want to hand them to the cashier. (I pay all kinds of attention while the coupons are scanning, just not always when they ring the groceries. ) Usually I have a pretty good estimate of what my OOP should be and I notice if I have been overcharged.

I LOVE this policy! You absolutely have to pay for the item first in order for it to work, which is one reason why I use the self check out lanes. I have benefited from this policy many times, but not quite as Suesaving described. In my experience (and I have been shopping at Kroger for over 15 years all over the country) CS refunds the ENTIRE price I paid for the item that rung up incorrectly plus any taxes I paid on that one item- so I get that item for free. If I purchased more than one item then they will refund the difference between the price I paid and the price I was supposed to pay. I have always understood this to be the scan right policy. In most stores it is posted on the glass windows behind the shopping carts as soon as you walk in the first set of doors to the store. It is normally on a very large poster next to another poster that says who the store managers are. (Sometimes I have also seen it behind the CS counter.) If you have any issues with this policy, I encourage you to call the store manager directly. I have only had to do this once in my life and had a very good outcome.
It is worth noting that this policy works regardless of whether or not you used coupons on the item(s) you purchased. Kroger does not adjust the amount they refund you if you used a coupon. Once I purchased toilet paper that had a tag stating it was $14.99 but it rang up $17.99. I used a $5 coupon on the item, paid for the transaction, then walked happily over to CS. They refunded me the $17.99 plus tax. So I essentially got a $5 credit on my transaction for taking a $17.99 package of tp! SWEET
