She (legacypt) was making the point that there are people who seek out mispriced items (outdated tags?), buy them, then take the receipt to cs to get it for free.
She also included as unethical, the people who see an item being rung up incorrectly, don't say anything, but go to cs in order to get it for free.
This second scenario is a fuzzy one for me (just me - I'm not saying anything about what anyone else thinks). Sure it's legit - it's not wrong. For me, I'd feel better just mentioning it to the cashier to make a quick fix.
But that's because I so rarely have a mis-priced item. My stores must be really good at tagging.
If it were a problem, I'd be over at that cs desk every single time in order to get their attention! Because I'd be really aggravated if they were regularly overcharging customers and most people do not notice.
Thanks to everyone for sharing their opinions on this. I love that so many people are willing to discuss a policy in a civil and respectful manner. Thank you all.
I might submit that this is one on which we may have to agree to disagree since there are obviously varying opinions on the matter.
But I think that regardless of what you think, it benefits everyone to know the store policy for stores where they shop.

Not super actively trading at the moment, but always interested in MIRs (NBPN in MN), Coke Codes & AMC movie passes! If you insist: my wishlist.
She also said that "many, yes many" people are abusing the system. That would only be possible if the store were making many, yes many mistakes. Nobody in this thread was suggesting that we should seek out wrongly marked items in order to get them free.
There are some states where the "fines" the store is required to pay for overcharging are pretty high. Michigan and either Vermont or Connecticut, I believe. The store is required by law to reimburse the customer 10 times the difference. Earlier I discussed being overcharged by $1.50 on raspberries. Using that example, the store would owe me $15 for making that mistake. It is called a super refund in MI. I bet those stores don't make as many mistakes.
Thanks! I can't get back until tomorrow. But, I'll have to hope that the shelf tag hasn't changed.
I agree with you. And another way to think about it...if you find you are overcharged for an item, they will just do a price override at the register. But the problem is still not solved. It is not the cashier's responsibility to change the shelf tag or fix the price in the computer. My thinking is that by taking it to Customer Service they are more likely to fix the pricing error than a cashier would be able to.
If I make the store aware of a scan error and they don't fix the error then that is the store's problem. In my opinion, the store is more likely abusing the system and it's customers by not having the right scan prices than the customer's are by using the scan right guarantee.
Does anyone know if this policy is currently in effect in Atlanta? All I got back today was the 30 cent over charge.
I have seen where I have taken an item to CS (recd only the price difference-not the item for FREE as is their policy) and then that item's price never gets changed for the next several days! Who is abusing things there? Seems to me it is the store. They were made aware of an error yet did nothing about it. How many other shoppers were overcharged and may not have noticed it?
When the item is handled as a "scan-rite" guarantee refund, the CS clerk is supposed to take note of the UPC and item along with the wrong price/correct price. This form once completed is supposed to be given to the store's file clerk whose job is to correct the erro in the store's computer system. Thus, correcting the problem. This process happens rarely at my store.
So, if you informed the storm of the error, go back the next day, and the next and the next and the next and the item is still wrongly priced, should you be due a "200%" refund each and every time??
Yesterday I bought a frozen meal--I forget the name! It wrang up the wrong the price. I made "my error" of telling the cashier at u-scan. She argued that the amt comes off when I hit PAY NOW. (A standard respnse to not knowing the correct answer/process!) Of course, it did not. I then showed her on the screen and had to walk her over (wasting MY time) and show her the shelf tag. She then agreed the price I quoted was correct as another flavor was marked at the lower price beside the one I bought-it was obvious of the price error.
She did adjust my price finally. I told her she would need to inform someone of the wrong price coming up-she did nothing and said "they" will take care of it. Never happened for days! I did not keep buying the itme since I did not like the product. So, those other 10 bags or so, I have to assume, wrang up wrong for those 10 or so purchases.
