Default Need Help - Moving to Louisville

To All of My Hot Coupon World Friends:

My husband and I have just learned (today actually) that we will be moving to Louisville, KY (we were both laid off in January - 13 days after our daughter was born - and this is the first job either of us have been offered) and I am in very desperate need of figuring out where the best place to live is. I love HCW and the people I have met here so I know you can tell me the best Krogers to shop at and the areas that are the best to live in. I know this isn't the ideal spot to post this but since people who live in Louisville post here I thought perhaps you would be willing to provide some OT help.

We will be renting (ideally we'll be renting a house), we have an 8 month old daughter and my step son is 9 and will be with us every so often. So what are your thoughts on the area? Where are the best Krogers (love shopping at Krogers - do the Louisville Krogers automatically double)? What areas should we definitely avoid? I'll take any help anyone can provide. I'll check this thread or you can PM me - I'd be willing to send some RAOK envies to those willing to provide some detailed info!

Thanks so much to all of you!

Welcome! I have lived in Louisville all my life. I currently live in Valley Station which is in the southern part of the city. It's nice out this way, have lived on this end of the city the whole time. The east end is more pricey as far as homes and such. I would(IMO please no one take it personal) avoid the West end (alot of violence). I really enjoy it out here in our part of town. My dad lives in the east end and while I love that too, the commute for my husband to work isnt worth the move.

The Kroger I shop at just opened in Dec of last year. Its big and nice. I know the ones around here always double up to 50¢ and the Meijer does also but they only double 2 like coupons. I don't really know which Kroger is the best, I love them all!! ;)

I hope this helped some, if you have any more questions I would be happy to help, post here or PM me!!

Cavaroni is right. East end is pricey, West end...well....But Southern Indiana, right across the bridge, is a great location. Quick access to to expressways to get you anywhere, and many stores available. We used to shop on the east side all the time, but now we rarely go there because we can find everything we need in New Albany/Clarksville area. As far as Krogers in Southern Indiana..There are three that I know of right off the top of my head, two Meijers, and lots of Walgreens.

Yes, definitely avoid the west end. Other than that I think that most parts of town have their ups and downs. I've lived in Old Louisville, Middletown, and Okolona which pretty much runs the gamut of lower income- middle class- upper middle class. Although I like Old Louisville it is not the place to raise a young family, especially since the nice parts are $$$!!! If I were raising a family though, I'd probably look for a place out in Lyndon which is in the east end. It's in a better area with better schools, but not as pricey as the very near surrounding areas like St. Matthews, Middletown, or Springhurst.

If you need any more help feel free to message me. I love Louisville and I hope you grow to love it, too!

Thank you to everyone for your suggestions and insights. I definitely have a place to start now. I'll be living in our home for the next 2 months and visiting Louisville every other week until we move. I'm excited to see some of the areas you have mentioned. To those who said I could PM with more questions - I will definitely be taking you up on that offer! Thanks - if you will send me a mailing address I will send each of you some coupons! Thanks for your help!

Halloween Re: Need Help - Moving to Louisville

Hi Grenflowr1, I would suggest as others have the east end which encompasses a huge area-it could be St. Matthews, Lydon, Middletown, or even J-town area, Hurstbourne Lane. There are a ton of great deals now, & I don't know if you have found any yet, but I would love to help you. I am a Realtor in Louisville, & there are several places that are lease or lease to own. If you are moving for a job, then that would be very possible. There are also some great apts./homes that are affordable, but, again, if you can pay that much in rent, it might be wiser to get a good deal on a lease, at least it is a good time in economy to get "good deals," I would love to help you find a place to live! Also, there are some good deals, on rentals/leases where I live in Oldham County, which have some of the best schools in the state, & I could send you some of those too! Let me know & good luck!

I've been in your shoes. We moved to Kentucky 2 years ago from Michigan. When we first moved here, neither one of us had jobs. All we had was our income tax refund. We faked (sorry, had no choice) employment and found a 2 bedroom apartment for $425 (near Bardstown Rd. and Fegenbush). 5 of us in a 2 bedroom (fun, LOL-NOT!!). Within maybe two months, we both had jobs (yeah Kentucky!). We stayed in that apartment for a year. After that, we both got even better jobs. Now, we're renting a house in the East End (nice four bedroom ranch) for around $900 a month. We signed a two year lease. While we enjoy the house and the area, we may look at moving next year when our lease is up. This is on the other side of town from where we both work (I work at the airport and my husband works at Iroquois High School). If we can't find anything that suits our needs, we'll just stay here and handle the commute.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask!!

Welcome! I live in Clarksville. I have lived here most of my life and I don't plan on leaving. I am not sure about the Louisville stores, but the one in Clarksville is good about taking coupons during the day. At night they get nasty with them.
