My apologies if somebody has said this before me. Since many cashiers are of the mistaken mindset that the items they choose on their screen don't matter...my suggestion for a smoother check-out, to ensure the proper total, is to divide your shopping into transactions using the same dollar value coupons. If all the coupons in a transaction are $1 or $2, etc, then yes it won't matter which items they pick as the coupon value is the same. There will be no danger of them assigning a $2 coupon to the $2.19 item while counting the $1 coupon against your $4.39 item. Know what I mean?
I thought of this after I got shorted when buying 8 J&J Red Cross items with 4 $1 coupons and 4 $2 coupons, the higher value coupons got assigned to the lower priced items leaving me with too much to pay after the dollar coupons were used on the $4+ items. It was the end of an hour check out and at that point I just didn't care. So this next time I'm checking out with all the same value coupons to eliminate the risk.
You can give a horse a coupon, but you can't make it save.

I always have them scan the item, scan the Q. then I make sure each one comes off easier. They may say they can't sdo it this way, but they can, they just have to hit subtotal first.
Amy S ...sometimes I can spell funny. It has to do with my disability from my service in the US Marines...
I agree with a PP about scanning the coupon after each item. I taped the coupons to the items and then simply removed them as the cashier rung up each item and handed them to her. I told her how I wanted to do it beforehand and advised her about using the subtotal key before each coupon. It was incredibly easy.
Another tip is not to use any coupons for $/2 or more. They never go through right, even with the above method of scanning the coupons. I'll never use those types of coupons again with the doubles.
Arn't the doubles this week for only $1? Not the $2 like last time?
That is a good tip.

Thanks!
Scanning the coupon immediately after the item is probably the best solution but it still requires the cooperation of the cashier which can be an issue. So this is another option when, for whatever reason, you can't or don't want to do it that way .
Yes, double $1 coupons this week but $2 doubles at some locations next week.

I noticed last time that my cashier didn't have to select any items when I was checking out, which surprised me. All I could figure out that it was because I bought completely identical items. Like, I bought 4 boxes of Tylenol *all* the same and 4 cans of Oust *all* the same size/scent. The K-Mart I was shopping is completely horrible, so I didn't end up buying much--I could see how trying to do this would make an insane number of transactions if you're buying a lot. But I just thought I'd mention it. :)
I tried to do the scan the coupon after each item and the cashier was huffy and pulled them all off the items after I just sorted them all out. She said I don't like doing them that way. I explained to her about taking the items off right and she said do I look stupid. Well I certainly didn't want to go into that discussion.
