I'm glad you are going to call. I can't remember which store it was but there was one that stopped doubles and enough people called corporate and the store rethought their policy and brought back doubles.

.
The people in the Pick n Save forum here started an online petition that was sent to Pick. Pick contacted the originator to talk to them about it. They did bring doubles back, but I can't say for sure that the petition is what caused that. It can't hurt to try something like that

BTW what is Dominicks policy on expireds, I have a few from 2005
I read something a couple of months ago (it was during a google & I can't remember where) that Dominicks was going to limit exipred coupons to 6 months but I haven't been to Dominicks for a while so I can't say for sure.

Last I checked Food 4 Less in 08/08 it was 2 to 3 years. I know Ultra just recently changed to 6 months, but you know for sure that Food 4 Less changed to 6 months also.

The main reason I didn't like the Shorewood Dominicks was that there was not one single wine tag and that was a trip. The Homer Glen store does not have many but at least I was able to get some once in a while. At Homer Glen I lost my favorite cashier since she was working there until she finished school. At the Homer Glen the problem I have is with one Customer Service person that can cop an attitude. I just found out the other day that I might be loosing my favorite cashier at Jewels now too.

It wasn't the one that I had been thinking of but for bringing up another situation where the store reversed the coupon policy change.

The one I had been thinking of was the inspiration for the Red Plum - Bring Back the Coupons site. I check through that thread and it was Giant Eagle.

here is the online petition they used. maybe someone good at expressing our views could write one up? Including that other stores have lower prices, take expireds, offer double coupons, and that if they discontinue exp, we can take our business somewhere else?

There were some really super nice cashiers at the Jewel in Lockport when we lived there. Its because of them that I found out that they took expireds. And since I saw them every week I remembered their names, now I can't anymore :( And I believe I know who you are talking about at the customer service desk that has an attitude, she and I had an argument once.

And yes the Dominicks in Shorewood NEVER has w/t I have stopped in there a few times over the last few months and I have yet to see ONE! I don't think they put them out at all.

Here's my take:
Unfortunately, even though couponing is on the rise due to the economy, we are still very much a minority. Us taking our business elsewhere won't affect them much, depending on how they look at their 'bottom line.' We don't spend much OOP (my mom just got $60 worth for like $8, and does so on a regular basis) but we do buy a lot volume-wise. My mom went in with the intent of using her $4/$40 (with FREES and other things) but then saw other items and managed to bump it up to $60 pre-coupon, which should excite managers. That's $20 more worth of things she didn't plan on!

I ONLY set foot in there to participate in Catalina combined with expired coupons. I always use the expired (starting with the oldest!) first, saving the non's for WalMart or Super Target.

You can bet if they stop expired I will shop at Dominick's (a little more expensive, but sometimes great deals and if I can use expired? SOLD!) and Ultra Foods where I never have coupon issues. I only buy meat at Butera because deli lunch meat is consistently HALF the cost of Jewel. Chicken breasts are no more than $1.99/lb when I buy them. Jewel is not even CLOSE. I also have Shop n Save and Garden Fresh near enough where it wouldn't be too much of a hassle to switch over. Granted I don't know their coupon policies as of yet, but you can bet I will look them up! Yes, it's easy for me as Butera and Dominick's are walking distance, and Ultra is on the way home from work. I won't mind going to other stores to do my shopping, as I don't do one large weekly trip anyway (just stuff here and there).

I worked at Jewel for 8 years, but that doesn't mean I will be a loyal shopper if they stop expireds!

I know we're supposed to call, but I sent an e-mail to Jewel, as I do better with writing.

I just did the Glad bag and Post cereal deal with my $10 CAT and expired coupons. I'm sad.

Poetangel, first off lucky you to still have a Butera near you. I used to go to the one on Archer and California years ago when I lived in Brighton Park. I remember they used to have some of the best sales around. I think they closed all their stores on the Southside and only left their Northside stores open.

Even though your oop or your mom's oop may be low Jewel still could be making money.

My grandparents used to own a small candy store when I was growing up. I remember my grandmother telling me that the price she could get from the distributor was higher than what our local Jewel sold at their regular price. This was because of the volume discount that Jewel got. She told me this back in the late 70's when Jewel was still a local chain. Can you imagine how much more of a volume discount they now get
as part of the SuperValue national chain. I don't know if you noticed but most of the independents have a lower price than any of the large chains. If you figure in what Jewel charges over the small independents and add in the additional discount they are getting a significant higher profit margin than the smaller stores.

Now let's talk about sales, catalinas and promotions. Did you ever notice that when an item goes on sale at one store that you will also see it on sale at other stores? That's because stores put items on sale when they get a discount from the distributor. So depending on how much they charge lower or higher than the discount, they can possibly make more on a sale. Now for those catalinas and promotions. Do you think the store pays for that? The catalinas are mfg coupons. Promotions may be picked up partially or entirely by the manufacturor.

Now that leaves coupons. I have heard that they can get reimbursed on coupons up till 6 months past the expiration date. So that means that even though you used expired coupons if they are not that old they may not take a hit on them if they can get them submitted before the cut off. So that means that they may not be loosing as much as they may want you to think. I have a feeling that they are cracking down on stores for turning in expired coupons where before more had gone through. This could be a big part of their switch in policy. Although it looks like they are still keeping double coupons at their other chains.

There is this also to consider. When the stores have these sales, promotions and perks. They are betting that most people are going to buy items in addition to the specials at regular prices rather than go to more than one store to get their shopping done for the week. This I have a feeling is what may be a large part of where they are hurting. Fewer people are willing to pay full prices for anything.

We've been spreading the message too well.

I called the District office and found the person I spoke to be less condescending than the person I spoke with at the Corporate toll number. If anybody else wants the number it is 630-948-6036.

I was so sad to see that my Jewel (Oakton & Milwaukee in Niles) has already stopped taking expireds. All of the registers have "DO NOT TAKE EXPIRED COUPONS" written and highlighted on the top of the screen for the checkers. Boohoo.

It wouldn't be so bad if they would just limit it to 6 months like Dominicks. It'd be easier to keep all my qs organized anyhow!
