I would think so. You should still be allowed to have $10 worth of product from the store. I would guess they would put the amount on a GC.
I have never had one of these coupons, so I am just guessing at how a return would be treated.
I bought a shirt on clearance with a $10/10 coupon. I only ended up spending $0.42 with the coupon. I need to return/exchange it for something else as it was a gift and ended up being the wrong size. I can exchange it for something else worth $10 without their being a problem, right?

Married since '01 to my Joe, and Finally, Finally Mommy to 3!Daughters, ages 5 and 2, and our son, age 1. Back home with us August 2011 after an attempted adoption August 2010. So thankful!
I hope so. I think at the very least they'd let me exchange it for something else and take $10 off that purchase. That would be perfectly fine with me, thanks for answering.
If you look at your receipt, it should have a line that says "return value" or something like that. I am afraid you won't get credit for it because I bought several things with a coupon at Penney's one time and it deducted a percentage from each item. When I went to return/exchange one of the things they wouldn't give me full value for it, even though I had purchased well over the $10 covered by the coupon.
That's disappointing! I looked and my return value is $0.39. I might try to see if I can exchange it. If not, it's ok I can either give it someone else, sell it, or donate it. It was a $26 shirt that I got for $0.39 so I guess I can't be too upset. Someone will be happy with it if I can't exchange it.
i think u would have to exchange it without receipt. just go and tell them u got the wrong size and dont have the receipt and want to exchange the size and they would gladly do it for u .
hope this helps
Thanks. The only thing is that it was on clearance and it was the biggest size that was left.
I ended up taking it back without the receipt and telling them I didn't have the receipt with me. I felt dishonest about it at first but I think it's ok, I didn't lie. I got a merchandise return voucher and got a similar shirt in a bigger size.
For future reference if you ask they might apply the $10 toward something else if you buy it at the same time you are returning. That's what I do, usually do it whether they ask or not. Or if it's split up and you return 1 item out of say 5 on that receipt, I apply whatever part of the coupon went toward that item to something else. Some stores or cashiers might not, that's how we do it in my dept though. If you return 1 out of 5 and you know they will do it it's good to point out that you used a coupon. I know I don't always look closely at that part of the receipt. If you only paid $.42 OOP I'm going to notice but if it's a long receipt I might not.
i had trouble getting the $10 back when i needed to exchange an item for another item. they apply it like a discount so once you use the coupon, it is done for, it has already been applied and can't be reapplied.
the manager was very nice at the store i went to. i had just bought the wrong stuff 10 minutes before. so she was willing to help me out and let me get a refund and then reuse the coupon. but that was a one time thing.
