Wow I feel your pain. One time I put a nice white leather couch on freecycle and was contacted by this woman saying that her brother and his wife's house burned down just that week and they were looking for furniture for them. I responded to her post because I felt sorry for the couple. They actually showed up when they said they were going to. They looked at the couch and seemed excited about it and said that they were going to get the truck ready to get it in the back. They went out to their truck and LEFT!
I actually called their sister and told her to tell them that I didn't appreciate what they had done. At the very least they could've told us they didn't want it.

This is why I quit freecycle permanently. I would offer items, and get dozens of emails from people with all kinds of sob stories, drama, begging you name it. It was revolting to me, and I quit. I realize many people on freecycle are looking for things they can resell at a profit - I have no problem with that, and they are certainly within their rights to do so. Freecycle is not a charity and was never set up for that purpose. Its purpose is recycling used items so they don't wind up in landfills. But I still do not care for the lies that people tell. I would rather someone just be honest and say "hey, I think I can fix that up and sell it, can I have it?" and then I'd be fine with giving it to that person.
