News Donated items

I was in a local Walgreens on Sunday and the manager came to me. He knows that I donate a lot of things I get at their store. He informed me that someone had returned one of the Bayer meters I had donated. They gave this person in-store credit, I told the manager without a receipt I did not realize they would return anything. Anyways after talking for awhile we decided I needed to take the price tag off or mark it out with a Sharpie and put a large D on the upc code and this would not allow anyone to return these again. Walgreens offers a lot of really good deals so I would like to ask everyone to also do this so these stores are not hurt by what we donate. I do not feel we should stop our donation because they are very important to a lot of other people who are not trying to beat the system.

Thanks for reading and have fun saving!!!

When I sell items at a yard sale, I always deface the UPC code (marker or utility knife) to prevent this from happening. I have never thought about the stuff that I donate. Sigh.

BTW, I agree with manders13. Unless you have your name on your donations, he can't know that this was from your donation. Still a good idea to mark through however.

IF he still had her coupons in store he could check the Bayers serial # on the coupon. Otherwise he was probably just assuming unless she had some mark on it.

This is a great reminder though because I just recently started donating more and it would not have occurred to me to do this. I do know DH gave some things to a guy at work many years ago only to find out he attempted to return the item to the store. I was sooooooo mad!!

I've never thought of this either. I guess we can't always assume the best of people anymore.

People have been returning these for a long time. Nothing new. I too get mad over it that someone can be like that. So what i do is draw a line through the UPC bar and i also write DONATE in big letters on it.

I never thought of this, but it's good to know. That's a little creepy, though, that he singled you out for donating it, surely you aren't the only one.

Ugh, i just had a yard sale this past weekend and one guy came by and asked if some of my otc were in date. I showed him where the date was but he was looking at a piece of paper that had some writing on it. I just assumed it was a shopping list from the wifey or something. Then he started talking about how he just talked to a manager and was told that he could return stuff for store credit w/o a reciept. So i looked at the paper more clearly and it was UPC numbers!!! So i told him that i like my stores and would never do that. And he had the nerve to tell me, "well that's where i'm heading to right now!". So from now on, i'll be crossing out the upcs with a big ol' sharpie. That just isn't right!

Thank you so much to the OP for this thread... I know that I've donated quite a few Bayer meters to my local senior home, & I know that a bunch of the boxes had the Wags sticker on them... I will now black out UPCs... Yeah, my relationship with the stores is too valuable to me & I have a feeling that I'm one of a few customers that buys them, so they might think it was me returning them...
