My 12 yr old has read all four and also her other book "The Host" but I should add she has been reading for a very, very long time and her reading level is that of a 12th grader. I have zero problem with her choosing her own books.
Yeah, I definitely wouldn't let my ten year old read it. The first three books are tame (there is still some teen stuff), but the last one is a book I wouldn't let any of my children read unless they were at least 15 or over. I think the bare minimum age a child should be to read Twilight books is 13. Any age under that would make me uncomfortable.
Charity is the pure love of Christ, and it endureth forever; and whoso is found possessed of it at the last day, it shall be well with him." (Moroni 7:47)

I've read the series and I personally think 10 is too young. If you haven't done so I think you and your DH should read it first before making any decisions on whether it's right for your son or not. Then if you think it's alright for him to see it, I would have DH sit down and have a heart to heart with mom and find out why she doesn't think it's appropriate and why she thinks it's ok for him to watch the movie and then go from there.
As far as the Christian view on vampire, I can only speak for myself, but I enjoy books of this genre just as I did the HP series. It's all just make believe.
