With the economy being so tough right now, I'd keep it simple, cheap, and close to home. I would definitely go with something that everyone participating will reap some benefits.

How about a spaghetti supper and a play/movie? Or a bake sale? Combine simple ideas with the Pizza Hut (or any other restaurant) cards and you could make money while putting money back into the pockets of your parents.

A lot of good ideas up there. Restaurant nights, gift card donations, etc. 20 parents in a school of ~200 kids is great. We have 700 kids, and we have fewer than that helping out. Here's my suggestion:

Welcome : GoodSearch : Search the Internet with GoodSearch and support your favorite charity or school.

Push it for all students and their families to use at home. Create a flyer about it and send it home. Though if they're low income, they might not even have a computer, but it's worth a shot.
And try to get it installed as the default homepage on the school's computers (they tried that in my school for a while, though I question if it's still there).

My school's PTO gotten a couple checks from them. Won't help you for this year, but will help out next year.
