Default Your Essential Shopper ?

Please feel free to move this to where it belongs if this isn't the right place...
Yesterday I noticed that my neighbors were receiving this package on their lawns called, "YES, Your Essential Shopper". It was wrapped in the plastic that my newspaper came in but I didn't receive one. My next door neighbor just ignored it and put it in his trash. I went out and got it, opened it up and realized it was full of coupons! The exact (4) inserts that I received in my Sunday paper PLUS sales ads and coupons for local stores at the shopping mall. No other pages, just the inserts and sale papers, including the Target ad, and others such as Kohls, and Best Buy. I wondered why I didn't get this "extra" insert in my regular delivery? So I went on line and found out this..... (copied and pasted from Gannett website)

Gannett Co. Inc. last month launched Sunday Select, a packet of preprints wrapped in a special 6-page editorial product called “Yes! Your Essential Shopper.”
The Indianapolis Star was the first of the publisher’s newspapers to roll out the promotion, which is aimed at non-subscribers.
The Des Moines (Iowa) Register followed and launches at 14 other large Gannett papers will follow in phases through the first quarter of 2008, said Austin Ryan, Gannett’s vice president of production.
Sunday Select contains the same Sunday inserts delivered in the core product. In Indianapolis, carriers are delivering Sunday Select; delivery in other markets will vary by site, Ryan said. Early tests in Indianapolis and Des Moines indicated a favorable response, and more than 4,000 Indy households said they wanted to receive Sunday Select prior to its Nov. 4 launch.
Ryan said that as Sunday Select rolls out to other Gannett sites, the publisher will begin to standardize on the software and equipment necessary to support the initiative. “We’re working on a Gannett-wide solution to handle this,” he said. “You have to be able to do this on a national level.”
“Yes!,” meantime, will also be fine-tuned. It will be zoned into four regional editions to reflect consumers’ buying habits in the Northeast, South, Midwest and West.
Dave Walker, president and chief executive officer of preprint placement firm Newspaper Services of America, touted the concept, calling it “one of the most innovative ideas in the newspaper industry in years.”

WOW! I'm wondering if very soon you'll be able to purchase JUST THE INSERTS, and not the entire paper?? How cool. I'm looking at this package and it's very neat. Nothing but sales ads, and sales info such as what stores have what on sale this week, and coupons. There's also recipes, and product information like why to buy an humidifier, and things like that. Apparently only the NON-subscribers receive this as an initiative to get more paying customers! Any one have any other info on this?

That sounds more like an incentive to become a non-customer! LOL

Our local paper is a Gannett paper and is supposedly participating. We don't take the newspaper---I read the news on the website and noticed a sign-up there. So I signed up and a week later received a phone call to make sure I wanted to receive the Sunday delivery of JUST the ads and coupons. Sounds good, right? So far I've received ONE delivery (the program began 3 Sundays ago), with only Kohls, Target and a furniture ad. No coupon. Bleh. I'm hoping that it will get better!

Here's a tip - I live in San Diego but actually get the L.A. times delivered. Why? Well, it's cheaper, it has all the same coupons (yes, sometimes they are a little different, but it always has the same general inserts).

Plus a bonus - how did I get the paper for FREE? If you have any United Frequent Flyer Miles it only takes 800 miles to subscribe for a whole YEAR of Sunday only. I think it takes about 20,000 miles just to upgrade from Coach to first class and way more to actually get a free ticket - so 800 for a year of a paper sounded great to me!

I thought that was great - then when there are great coupons I don't have to feel bad buying my local paper.

Hope that helps someone! Check out your mileage points to use them for something other than just tickets if you want to! Lots of times it pays off!

I don't know if this has been talked about but I went to a post office on a monday once and was mailing a package and they postal worker told me to go out to the table and use the newspapers in the trash can to stuff my package. I don't know where the papers came from but maybe from people who had post boxes and threw away the advertisements but I found tons of inserts and grabbed them.

I live in Boynton Beach, FL, which carry the Sun-Sentinel and the Palm Beach Post. I have to admit, I only get the Sunday Paper for the coupons. I would love to be able to just get a subscription for coupons only. Sunday papers have a schedule of when coupons show up in them or not, so some times I get them and sometimes I don't (like last weekend...not a one). So, I'm paying for something that doesn't come. But the bright side is when they do come, they are very good!
