It's really trial and error. I even use less of the HE detergent because my washer gets so sudsy if I use the recommended amount.
Can I use regular detergent in a HE machine. I thought I read some place on here that you can, just use a smaller amount. How much smaller?

You may have read it here but you're not supposed to. If you do and something goes wrong you will void your warranty.
My mom used to use Fresh Start and thought she could use it in hers. Well she quickly gave up that notion and won't comment on it.
Luckily the stuff I have been using for years can be used in either type of washer. So I already had the right stuff. I did have one bottle of regular stuff but I gave that to the plumber.
I have had a front loader for about 6 years now and have always used reg. deterent in it. I use about 1 TABLESPOON per load a bottle lasts a long time in this house.
Something that I do after I use up a bottle is run the machine empty with some bleach in it. You will be surprised at how much suds you will have.

OP, you're right - there have been a couple of threads here where people said they have successfully used regular detergent in their front loaders (or HE machines). Some have said they only use regular detergent and never had a problem.
I'm on my 2nd front loader - the first was a dud - but I only use HE detergent. I really love this machine and don't want to take any extra chances.

Purex makes their detergent for all washer types, so if you're worried about the warranty, that's a cheaper route until you can stockpile. Once your warranty is up, use your stockpile.![]()
