We always got the vinyl zippered covers for all mattresses in our house just to protect the mattress from dust mites & the like. I really think it'll last a year at least, unless they jump on their bed a lot.
hi
I am looking for some ideas for waterproof mattress pad covers.
My twins turned 5 today and they are still having problems with bedwetting at night.
I was looking to see if anyone had any good ways or ideas for a cover for their mattresses. DH is at walmart right now getting some vynal ones but I have a feeling those are going to rip easily.
Thanks for any tips and ideas.

Are you designing your very own god...or is God designing His very own you?

They sell these pads for cribs that are the size of a crib mattress. They are made of a cotton absorbent material. We place them under the fitted sheet above the mattress pad right around where they would normally have the issue with the bed wetting. I forget what they are called--I bought ours at Babies R Us a long time ago. Anyway, they work great and the best part is that we can bring them with us on trips too and use them in hotels, etc.

Thanks, I will have to look into seeing if I can find those. I wouldnt mind the big covers but it seems like such a hassle when they wet and you have to wash. I figure a smaller one would be easier to clean. I have looked into making homemade ones out of cotton, flannel and a plasticky type of material but in the end they seem just as expensive as the rest after purchasing materials.

We do still use a mattress pad but just a regular one (we have twin beds). Generally the waterproof pad gets everything pee-related. =) I leave the pad on there all the time, just like the mattress pad. I just change the sheets. They are machine washable though and are easy to transport. Our kids don't have high volume accidents. If yours do, then you might want to try a couple pads stacked to see if two are needed. Generally they come in packs of two (I think).

Are you putting them in pull ups or diapers?
I kept mind in that until they stop wetting the bed.
Walgreens and Walmart have pads that don't cover the whole bed but are placed underneath the person They look like this: Medline*Washable Underpad | Walgreens you could even sew some together to make them cover the whole bed.
we have purchased ones to cover the whole bed and they rip.

We have had them in pullups. I felt since they are officially 5 now that they need to get this down or should be learning. We have had them in pullups for a while now and when they have them on they feel as if they don't need to go downstairs at night to go to the bathroom.

It's still age appropriate to be wetting the bed. It's obviously up to you..but when they are asleep and wetting the bed..they are not doing it on purpose...KWIM? Each of our pediatricians have said until they are about 7..some kids just do it..normally by 7 there bladders mature enough to hold it.
My oldest stopped finally at 6.
My 5 year old still does, we took sippy cups away...and he still does (but quit soaking through the pull up!). Their dad wet the bed too as a child.
