when mine were little, I used the bigger leaf/trash bags under the fitted sheet, lay them out flat, or cut the sides to open it more and/or "bag" the mattress if it's a smaller crib sized one

Oh i understand that they are still learning. I do beleive that they just don't wake up when they have to pee. I know they don't do it on purpose. I just want to work with them so they do know what to do instead of just keeping them in pullups. I have set a certain time to stop big drinks so they don't have so much in their bladder. I do let them have a small sip before bed, Because I don't want them thirsty.

We bought our mattress pad covers made just for kids from Rooms to Go. They are soft and cotton, but work GREAT!!! I think they were $20 each but totally worth it. They don't make any noises like the vinyl ones and they don't rip. We've had one for over two years, washed and dried dozens of times and still looks brand new and works perfect. The other one we just bought in May. I am been completely pleased with the quality.
