Globe GREEN THREAD; Reusable Produce Bags.

They’re not as big as a plastic shopping bag and the average shopper doesn’t bring home as many as they do shopping bags, but plastic produce bags do make an impact. Unlike other bags like bread bags and even shopping bags they’re pretty worthless as far as reusing I think; I feel lucky to make it home without tearing.

Reusable shopping bags are in style now and can be found practically in every store, so why not reusable produce bags? Sure, there are a few available online. Chicobag has a few really nice ones but they’re a little pricey, and I would need more than just a couple because I really love fresh produce. Plus I like to avoid shipping costs and I like to buy things in stores so I can see what I’m buying.

I started crocheting a produce bag with size 10 bedspread thread, but I’ve already put a lot of thread into it and it’s no where near the size I would like. So I’m turning it into a gift bag for MIL’s Mother’s Day gift in a few months, and it will double as a potpourri bag or bag she can put her delicates in when she does laundry.

So I’m curious, how many of you use reusable produce bags? Did you buy them online or somewhere else? Did you make you own or just reusing something else. I imagine that one would need to be careful when choosing a material to use, you wouldn’t want something that would make your bag of produce weigh heavier.

i dont use them. I am with you that they are just a waste and there is no way to really reuse them. i just put my veggies in my bag and then put them in a plastic grocery bag (one bag is better than 2)....

i will say that i noticed today goodwill would like grocery bag donations. two uses is better than one.

It just came to me today how and with what I could make some reusable produce bags. I have two spare laundry bags on hand so I cut one of them up and so far I have one bag finished. There's already seams on some sides so I only need to close the open sides. I don't have a sewing machine so I crocheted the sides so I could close in the rough edges, and because I'm a crocheter. But if you are confident with a thread and needle it should be a piece of cake that way too.

I found a pattern online for reusable produce bags and am currently working in "tweaking" the pattern to work for me. I bought some fabric today and will hopefully have some made this weekend to share. I am sewing mine because I'm not the best at crocheting.

Just a question? Will the weight of the zippers/plastic string grips make a difference to you when weighing your produce?

I only take produce bags for items that are wet or for green beans, okra, etc. I found I threw most of them away and put the produce directly into the fridge bins anyway.

Zippers might but the pull-strings on the one I made are crocheted with size 10 crochet thread like what doilies are made of; so it is very light.

Well, you kind of rock at crocheting - I love the pattern you are working on though :)
