How do you get rid of mold in carpet??

In our basement I have noticed several big black spots on our berber carpet. I think its mold but not sure since the carpets are way overdue for a steamcleaning and the kids are always going down there with wet shoes on.

Anyways, I need to get rid of this and make sure if it is mold that its killed. I've read many different things online but need to know from someone what really works.

I am concerned about what is causing this as well. My kids seem to have a chronic cough in the winter and I hope its not from the mold.

Have I mentioned lately how much I hate this house and want to move ASAP???? Ugh, its one problem after another.

Sounds like my DEN! I ripped up my carpet down there and gotta bleach mop the flooring. Im not sure what you can put on the carpet itself to get rid of the mold without getting rid of the carpet as well! I always wonder about a mold issue and chronic coughs with my son as well! But yeah I ended up just totally taking out all my old carpet.

If you pull up the carpet..and peer underneath you'll know.

I honestly don't even think you can get mold out of carpet...it would probably need to be pitched.

I agree with the others...GET RID OF IT!!!!!! It is a serious Health issue for you and your family. Chronic Cough is only ONE of the side effects of Mold! Bleach will kill it, but you have to get UNDER the carpet and pad if you have one! Otherwise steam cleaning will only spread it to other areas in the carpet! I'd be concerned that it may be in the walls?

I agree ~ toss the carpet. If at all possible have a professional service remove it so not to spread the dry mold which is just as dangerous as it flys when dry. Take it from someone who knows. Mold is very very dangerous. I became very ill in 1999 from exposure to mold, mildew & fungus & it seems I still have not totally recovered as. I seem to keep having health issues arise that are traced back to the exposure.

Thanks for the advice but it turned out it wasn't mold. Had someone come out and check it out. One spot was from soda or something that one of the kids had spilled a long time ago and I never knew they spilled it. The other spots just were dirty from the kids shoes and whatever else they have spilled. I steamcleaned the whole area and it all came out.
