Cornmeal is what was in a recipe I used before. it's really cheap too.
I have a bunch of pricey facial cleansers I've picked up for free. They're nice but I like exfoliating scrubbies and they are all creamy cleansers. I bought a facial loufa but I don't like it, it's scratchy not scrubby. It also smells sour no matter how well I rinse and dry it so I have to put in the laundry.
So, does anyone have any ideas of what I can add to make my cleanser scrubby? I was thinking maybe salt, anyone ever try that? Baking soda will not work, I actually want something gritty or grainy so it will exfoliate. I would also like it to be something I already have around the house or is very inexpensive to buy.
Thanks,![]()

sea salt. I added that to my loreal that didnt have scrubbies in it. Worked perfect.
I just watched a "SuperModel Tips" TV show on Dr. OZ.
It was Cheryl Tiegs, Beverly Johnson and Carol Alt.
They use granulated sugar on their face with soap since their teens.
Salt was brought up--said salt too drying. It seems to me that would be great though for skin with acne, and salt has great antiseptic properties.
I've heard of both salt and sugar being used for facial/body scrubs. My sister makes her own and she uses sugar because she says its gentler on the skin. I guess it would depend on whether you have very sensitive skin or not.
I've used sugar with my favorite facial cleanser for years now...works great!![]()

I used to make soaps and face scrubs, and here are some things that I have used. Poppy seeds, sea salt, sugar, ac moore and Micheals both carry soap supplies, and the best thing I've found is ground apricot seeds, they also carry strawberry and blueberry seeds that will work well.

Go with Sugar or cornmeal. Don't use salt, it can be too drying on your face, and if you have any open cuts, it can sting. and if you accidentally get it in your eyes-OUCHY.
Sugar is great because it contains glycolic acid, which is a natural chemical exfoliator- so it's a double whammy on dead skin cells. Try using sugar in the raw if you like it grainy. Grab a couple packets from starbucks or you local coffee shop and give it a shot before you buy a lot of it.
For a good "scrubby" body scrub I mix 1 part body wash (or shampoo- whatever I have more of in the stash) and 2 parts sugar in a jar with a tight lid. I keep it in the shower.
You might want to avoid anything too scratchy, it can cause micro-tears in your skin and that can lead to bacteria getting in and causing infections, or if you have acne lesions, the scratchy particles can aggrovate the lesions and then spread acne bacteria to other parts of your face or other parts of your body. Eww.
