Ew. I am still using detergent no matter what anyone says. I don't use the recommended amount though.
We don?t need no stinking laundry detergent- Smart Spending - MSN Money
I found this article by accident today. I thought I might share it with HCW. I recently started using less detergent to wash my clothing that wasn't as soiled and found that it came clean just fine. However, my DH's clothing did not. He's a mechanic, so his clothes are filthy!
So, I'll keep using the recommended amount on his laundry and a scoop of Oxiclean, too.
I try to spot treat the kids clothes when I can remember and use a little less soap to wash their clothes. I found that plain-old dawn dish soap works great to spot treat clothes. My grandmother uses Lux dish soap and she has some of the cleanest laundry I've ever seen.
I had a consignment shop owner tell me to use "Greased Lightening" to spray treat kids clothes. I'm not sure if it works, but she swears by it.
So, who's gonna quit using laundry soap? Not many I'm sure.

Since I came to this site and read all the wonderful advice given here, I have cut way back on the amount of soap I use. I used to use a full cup on all loads * hangs head in shame* I was buying soap every 2-3 weeks for a family of 4. Soap lasts awhile now.

I've washed clothes before without any on accident...they don't smell so good...kind of like wet dog...blech.
I'll keep using soap but I already use less than the recommended.

I use regular soap on the colors, but for the whites I use just a small (1/4 cup or less full load) amount of dishwashing liquid and white vinegar.
No detergent would be like takeing a bath without soap....or I think it would be..
I have HE washer,I have not used the right amount since I got it but I still use detergent and will as long as I can get dirt cheap or even have to pay full price if I have to, for it makes no sense to wash them with out soap..

To me that would be like not using shampoo on your hair. If it were not very dirty it might do ok with no shampoo but eventually (I think) it would look pretty bad.
I have a front-loader and use HE detergent but only about a tablespoon per load so it's not breaking the bank.

Yes, greased lightening works great, another tip I learned, for grease, easy off oven cleaner works on clothes! I had a very delicate dress that had a grease stain...took it right out & didn't hur the fabric at all! I was toast is I didn't treat it so I had nothing ot lose trying it!
I use laundry detergent, liquid fabric softener and 2 dryer sheets per load. It is very important to me to smell good. It works just ask my husband, LOL I can't stand dirty clothes. I also wash everything that was worn that day. I have heard some people rewear their clothes, now to me that is worse than not using detergent.

As to the greased lightening, absolutely works and would be excellent on your hubbies clothes too!![]()
We have the front loader washer that requires the HE detergent because it requires less sudsing. I found that I use so much less detergent too! Except of course those really filthy clothes when hubby or son work on cars or ride motocross etc. Then it's full court press on deep cleaning.
But not use any would be a mistake in my humble opinion. You would never be able to use cold water washing and get odors and stains out.
