With the drought in GA, we have had to come up with some different water saving ideas. We have a great washer, and did cut back on showers and washing dishes (yeah paper plates). When I run the water to get it hot for the shower, I've put a clean (new) trash can under the running water. I was using this to water the plants outside. (We are under no outside water at all restrictions). Also I've used this water to rinse dishes or clean the floors. Theresa
the bucket works for me as well
A cute phrase for saving water flushing the toilet: "if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown send it down".
We filled several 5 gal buckets with rinse water from the washing maching to water plants outside. We also have a 20' hose connected to our air conditioner and use that water for watering plants in the summer. It's amazing how much water comes out of that hose. We've been doing that for years. Seems like ever since we moved to Georgia, we've been in a drought. This year has been much more severe and we had to get more creative. Love this thread, hope to get lots more ideas.

one thing i have always did is get a empty 1/2 gal milk jug and fill it with water and stick it in the toilet tank and you will use 1/2 less on every flush but if a gal will fit use that and your toilet will flush as normal
if you dont want to fill a jug with water you can always use and old brick used to biuld houses
I put a bucket under the faucet when Im waiting for the water to run hot so I can do the dishes, and then either water the inside plants, or pour it into my washer
I have an old sink with just one basin, so I use a plastic wash basin to put my dishes in that need rinsing. I rinse glasses and pour the water from the glass into the plastic basin to rinse the other dishes, when the water starts to get soapy, or the basin gets full I pour it again in my washer, which is just in the other room.
We reuse bath/shower/dish water for plants. We save the water from our dehumidifiers too. We have leaky gutters that we either planted gardens under so we don't have to water as much, or put buckets under to collect water. Buckets under ac units too. Lots you can do to save water.
