HELP Garage Disposal smells HELP

My garage disposal smells like a yuck old mop that has dried. You know sort of musky moldy damp smelling. It only stinks if you really put your head in the sink or if you walk out of the kitchen and walk back in.

I have put two small boxes of baking soda and vingar down it but still it remains. HELP!!

I spent two hours cleaning harden grease that blacken with mold out of the dishwasher (the small holes and crack where the door connects). So gross, used a whole bottle of vingar in there as well. The dw is on it's last legs and the owners before us didn't take care of the house so I am not suprise of the mold but so GROSS! But shhh we won't talk bad about it so it won't die.

My house smells like I have been making pickles. and now a vanilla candle.

Really need advice on how to make the disposal good again.

thanks
Kate

The only thing I know of that might work is an enzyme digestant with bacteria - assuming what's down there is organic. You can find it at a janitorial supply or pet food store. PetsMart should have Simple Solution stain and odor remover - it has a decent scent. It's in the $6 neighborhood. My favorite is enzymagic from Claussen carpet cleaning but it's incredibly hard to find.

I usually just put some lemon rinds in there or any citrus will work.
You may also want to take a rag and clean under the rubber part.

I second the citrus rinds. When we had a really old garbage disposal, we used lemon rinds for about two or three days, and it finally nuked the smell. HTH!

There could be grease caught in the s pipe under the sink get some drano or sink drain stuff. Then every so often i run hot water and dawn or other grease cutting soap down it to keep it from building up. a great big squirt usually does the trick.

Another thought, when you are scrubbing out teh sink with comet or soft scrub..whatever your favorite cleaner is...get that area up under the rubber area..I do it at all the houses I clean & you'd be really grossed out by what I get out!

Try this: Don't use bleach it will ruin the rubber inside the disposal.
Professional Products
If ice, hot water and lemons aren't doing the trick, you may need to go to the next level: the professional cleaning products.
There are a number of options available at your local home improvement retailer. But, there are also a few options online. One product that we found worked well is called, Disposer Care. Simply drop one packet into the disposal and let the blue foaming action degrease, clean and deodorize. We like it because it's easy to use and biodegradable.
We found this product at a number of online retailers, such as:
www.AlwaysBrilliant.com
www.TheHomeMarketplace.com
www.MilesKimball.com

I ditto with using citrus rinds (lemon, orange and grapefruit are my favorites). Every now and then, our disposal gets a yuck smell. What I do is while the hot water is running, add a piece (or small pieces) of citrus peel, turn the disposal on. Keep adding till entire rind has been ground. I do this at night, last thing before I go to bed. Then first thing in the morning, I run the hot water again along with the disposal and a few pieces of rind. Usually after doing that routine for 2 days, the smell is gone.

Also, I keep leftover rinds and freezing them in a ziploc baggie, so whenever I want a refreshing scent, I can defrost the rind and run it through the disposal.
