HELP Would this save money on electric?

I was at the store the other day and saw the things you plug in and then put your light into the plug and it come on and off when you have it set to. Like you could have it set to 6 o clock and then your lights would be on when you get home. I was wondering if I put those around my house and pluged everything up to them if I would save money? I could set everything to go off at night and on in the morning... has anyone tried doing this... or would it even save money on electric? I was thinking about plugging my surg protectors up to them also... that way things like my tv, dvd player... and all that stuff will go off at night even though I forget to unplug.... what does everyone think?

That's an interesting question. I don't unplug most of my things because it's hard to get to the plugs behind furniture and I do feel guilty about it.

I think a lot of people use them to have a few various lights and other items come on and go off when they are away from home for several days at a time. I've noticed my neighbors across the street have been gone all week and it has been pitch black over there. I've heard that burglars look for things like that.

I don't know if it would help or not but most things use electricity just because they are pluged in, doesn't matter if they are on or off. So unless you keep forgetting to turn off your lights I wouldn't waste my money. To completely turn most things off they have to be unpluged.

No it probably wouldn't save money unless the thing you are plugging it into is shut off completely at the outlet & not just the appliance level.

If your TV, VCR, DVD player, etc are plugged into the wall & turned off they are still using electricity. It's called a phantom load.

What you need to do is plug your appliance into a surge protector & shut the surge protector off at night. Then the appliance will stop draining any electricity & will lower your electric. Ours is down to $40/month.

One thing I have done for my tv, dvd, cable box etc... that is in my bedroom is to put it on the wall switch. Then it is easier for me remember to turn them on and off.

Would the things that you can plug your christmas tree up to and then just flip a switch work. That way I can just flip all switch's when I go to bed... I know those switch things should be in the store soon!
