Nurse Re: HHH - Storm Recovery - How can you help

I was just thinking about this, as I was watching the 20/20 show, on the
tornado's, in Alabama.. how can we help?.
The #'s and websites are great, but sometimes the care can be slow, tho i could be wrong about that. :)

Could we possibly send direct care packages, to some of our members, who've been here awhile.. (i know that sounds mean, but sometimes, one has to do that, to protect the forum and the frauds.).
    ....

I realize, many roads may be closed, but perhaps theres still addys, that can be gotten to. One could pack the Ups envies, or send out a 10.00/15.00 box.. w/ a lot of shampoo, toothpaste, tp, H/B , all the stuff, most of us all have stocked up. Also food too, clothes, whatever is needed.
    ......~~~~~~~~~

I wouldn't mind helping organizing this, helping put this together at all~
It'd be my pleasure, just something to think about.

I think it's a great thought! And I have actually done the same thinking.

I live in the area though we came through it lucky. No damages to our house and no powerage. Friends of mine have now been without power for 4 days and that's in area that wasn't one of the hardest hit areas.

The response of people willing to volunteer and donate in this area have been amazing! But will need more. My girls and I went to a donation site yesterday to drop off some stuff. The trailers were full and with the parking lot full, all I could do is watch all the generous people making donations.

Anyone outside of this area wanting to donate items and want to ship it, I am willing to be a ship to location. (As long as it's ok with HCW) I am currently trying to collect ship direct addresses for as many hard hit areas as I can. I will get them posted as soon as I can.

I know a lot of us are on really tight budgets and shipping costs are really expensive. For years I have done "mystery shops" at area Post Offices thru a legitimate company out of Virginia called Bare International. If you register as a new shopper, you can search for USPS locations in your area and read what you have to do for the simple shop. They will pay you $10 or more plus reimburse your shipping cost up to a certain dollar amount, also close to $10. So if you could send a small care package of free items for under $20, they would pay you that much so the shipping wouldn't cost you anything but your time and gas going to the Post Office!

I am so happy to see this post. On April 27 a little before 2 a.m a tornado came thru Manchester, GA and some more small nearby towns. Manchester, GA is the city in which I live the tornado hit within less than a mile from my home destroying several homes including the elem. school. Never in my life have I seen anything like this before I have always seen this on tv but never this close to home as I could just hear the wind right outside my home not knowing the type of damage it had done until the next morning the only thing left to do is to cry to see how quick you can go from having so much to almost nothing in less than 5min. The elem. school which my kids attend has came to a agreement to close the school for the rest of the year which is a problem for a lot of working parent with a small amount of daycares they have fulled up over night I dont have a large stockpile but I was able to give a little but I see some people are will to give if you something small or large to that you would like to donate please let me know not asking for cash just small item for some of the kids and there parents i dont know if it okay to post it here or not if not please move

Please keep GA in your prays

This thread really touches my heart, I have chills from reading how compassionate people really are. All of my family lives in Alabama, we are only in NC bc my fiance is stationed here. I think that a lot of lives were lost in bama from these storms because of a storm that had come through early that morning & a lot of people were with out power when the massive tornado outbreak occurred. All day I was monitoring the weather on my computer & calling our family to let them know what was going on. I thank God that my family is safe. My fiance's family wasn't as fortunate. 1 of his grandmother's lost her home entirely, their ground floor is in what was their front yard & they still have not located the second floor. It truly touches my heart to see that there is still goodness in people's hearts. We are going down this weekend & I hope to be able to do something to help. There were a lot of children who lost not only their homes but their parents as well so I hope to be able to do something for them.

Also while I am there I will get more addresses for shelters & donation sites if anyone is interested. I noticed that there is only 1 address for Alabama & Alabama was the hardest hit state an EF4 with a base that was over a mile wide ripped through over 80 miles of the state from Tuscaloosa to north east of Birmingham. It completely demolished everything in it's path. This is a video on youtube that shows only a small fraction of the aftermath as well as the tornado its self from a weather cam YouTube - 4/27/11 Tornado Damage in Tuscaloosa (from photos that have been sent to me & videos this video doesn't even begin to cover the depths of the devastation)

Also I have an address for the Alabama Baptist Children's Homes & Family Ministries, this organization is providing care for the children who were orphaned during this event. They are in need of any children's items, especially things like diapers, baby food, wipes, formula, clothes, small toys, etc. Their website is Alabama Baptist Children's Homes & Family Ministries

I called today & got an address to send items to, it is
Alabama Baptist Children's Homes & Family Ministries
    2681 Rocky Ridge Lane

I was just in Northwest Georgia this weekend. I have family there. Thankfully my family members, most specifically my grandparents, are all ok and suffered extremely MINOR damage to their home and lost some trees. My grandparents live in Ringgold, Georgia, the hardest hit area in Georgia (right by the Chattanooga/TN state line) and they are literally about 1/4 of a mile from where complete devastation took place.

It's horrible. Until you see it in person, the photos from news sites do not do it justice. I have never seen anything as horrible in my life, and I have seen my fair share of hurricane damage from growing up here in Florida.

Many folks lost their entire homes, everything they own, pets, and worst of all, loved ones and friends. It's so terrible, words can't even describe.

If anyone wanted to put together a donation/care package for the Ringgold, Georgia area, I am sure my grandma would be happy to receive those packages and take them to the local donation areas in her town. There are so many churches helping out and collecting donations, offering shelter and restrooms, etc. It's really amazing how the people of Ringgold have come together to help each other out at such a tragic time.

I don't know if anyone cares to see any more pictures, but I just uploaded all the photos I took this weekend from Ringgold to my Facebook page. If you want to see them, just friend me on there, my name is "Carly Gaudry Curry" and I'll accept your request and you can see the areas hardest hit in their town.

Even if you can't donate in some way, please just keep these people in your prayers and thoughts. They need it terribly right now.

Edited to add: My aunt and cousins also live in Northeast Alabama, in Dekalb county near Fort Payne. I'm sure if anyone wanted to send donations to the Northern Alabama area that she would be fine with accepting those to take to donation centers as well. They live pretty close to Rainsville where the category F5 tornado came through. From what I've heard, the damage is AS bad as Ringgold OR worse so those folks need all the help they can get as well!
CARLY, to Logan, 4 yrs, and to my love, Lee.
