I am far more likely to value the opinion of someone who appears intelligent, well-read, articulate, and fair-minded. When a poster repeatedly makes errors that interfere with understanding (like the afore-mentioned total lack of punctuation and poor grammar), for me, it detracts from their believability.

Does this make me a snob? Maybe. But I totally get the OP's point.

Smee, I agree with this...but, online I don't know anyone and I don't have anything to go by other than the words they post, and how they post them. It's sort of limiting. In "real life", it doesn't matter nearly as much. I used to be involved with someone whose native language was Greek. He was an amazing person, and a very successful businessman, but couldn't write well in English. Clearly that did not alter my opinion of him. I mean, hey, I can't write that well in Greek and he didn't hold that against me. (I think.)

I don't necessarily disagree. When I say I consider the individual, it's likely someone I've interacted with on more than one occasion and have gotten a feel for, already kind of reading their words through a filter. Even with first time interactions, though, I try not to link correct (or not) writing with intelligence whether it's brilliant writing or keyboard banging. I get being annoyed that something is difficult to read. I don't think annoying means inherently unintelligent. To be clear, I am talking about improper grammar/spelling, not writing style. I'll judge the heck out of that.
