Default Coffee Talk Round 2. Tonight's Topic: Homeschooling

    Talk amongst yourselves:

    Have you homeschooled your children?

    Would you if you could?

Do you think it makes kids less able to handle social situations?

Do you think homeschooled kids miss out on "life"?

Have you homeschooled your children? Not yet/

Would you if you could? Yes. Planning on it for next school year! DDs will be 4 and 3, so we'll be doing preschool.

Do you think it makes kids less able to handle social situations? Not a chance AS LONG AS you provide other opportunities to see other kids, like other classes/lessons, playgroups, and joining homeschool groups.

Do you think homeschooled kids miss out on "life"? Not a chance AS LONG AS parents provide other opportunities for them. In fact, I think homeschoolers have it better than kids in public school because they can do so much more to learn about the world. If you're doing a unit on sea animals in school, the teachers can show pictures and movies. If you're homeschooled, you can actually go to the ocean or aquarium. You can take a road trip and hit tons of historical sites. I'm really excited about the possibilities for teaching my kids about the world.

Have you homeschooled your children? No.

Would you if you could? I've been considering it. My youngest has Tourette Syndrome and my oldest has an anxiety disorder. Both of them are already experiencing issues that the school isn't always prepared to deal with on a daily basis.

Do you think it makes kids less able to handle social situations? If the children are secluded from others it could happen, but most home schooled kids that I've seen have been pretty well socialized.

Do you think homeschooled kids miss out on "life"? No, in fact I think we'd probably be able to do more "life" type things if they were home during the day than we're able to do now.

That's pretty normal. Is he skeert of paper being blown across the floor by the fan or of anything that touches his foot or leg?

    Now I KNOW I you! Wub...Twuuuee wub...

Anyway, I was home-schooled exclusively until HS. Then I attended a private school.
I don't feel I missed out on 'life' nor do I feel that I am not a well-adjusted, functioning and sociable adult. My parents had field trips all the time with other kids who were home-schooled.

In fact, I am pretty proud of the person that I am. I have a plenitude of friends, a long-term SO (3 years in March ) and have held many successful jobs. Speaking of, I've never gone on an interview for something and not gotten the job (if I wanted it).

Now, would I home-school my own children if I have any someday? Probably not.

Why? Because it's a lot of work and I plan on becoming a teacher in the next couple years anyway, so I will just live/work in a decent school district and send my children there.

Oh and for those that say academically they're home-schoolers are behind: I have an AAS Marketing, a CRT Marketing, will obtain my BA in English in Dec '12 and hope to go on to obtain my M.Ed. with Teaching Certification.
And by the time I'm out of school, the couple thousand in student loans I have, will be paid off. But that's another thread entirely......
