Walmart is really bad about selling expired products. I have to remember to check everything there. Kroger here puts things nearing expiration on Manager's Special and usually half off or more.
Kroger's is very good about selling products before they expire. They usually have a huge clearance section with marked-down food. I love shopping at Kroger's.

I love shopping at Ralphs (a Kroger store) b/c they mark down all the near expired's down 50%+.

I buy a lot of meat on mark down and freeze it asap. It's pretty much the only way we get to eat meat.

That's cool that you get something free if you find something expired... what's the free item?

This gets me - it was on markdown - so clearly they knew it was expiring soon - why not check those items - when it clearly has recently been marked down - so they should watch those extra closely. With the way stores should be moving product and re-stocking.... there shouldn't be expired stuff on the shelf - certainly not items growing things... it's one thing if something just expired... but a year out or several months is ridiculous - because that means some stocker handled that gross expired food multiple times as they shuffled it around during re-stocking... they should be checking whats on the shelf and it's dates when putting more items on the shelves.
