The Fair Tax would accomplish what everyone wants to see happen. The rich would pay more because they buy more. The less means you have, the less you are likely to buy (if you are smart...).
In addition, a few tweaks to make it even more fair, such as a tax prebate for folks who just can't even pay the sales tax, gives even more "fairness" if you want to call it that - really, it's just a way of caring for those who need it most.
I'm not against paying more taxes to get us out of the shape we are in - BUT UNFORTUNATELY the more we send to Washington, the more they spend! Rather than put it towards reducing the deficit, they would find more ways to spend it to further their careers without any serious effort to make things right.
So that's why I'm against any new taxes. Not because I'm unwilling to pay my fair share, or even more than my share- because I would if I thought it would make the least bit of difference, but because I think it would enable them to continue their wasteful habits. Not a single one of them who has any influence in government has any intention of seriously addressing the problem.
