Just throwing in my two cents here. Or would that be 1/100th of a cent given the current economy?

Please try to see the whole RSVP thing from the viewpoint of the person responsible for planning whatever event it is sent for. For whatever reason, they believe you might like to attend. They've provided a pre-addressed, pre-paid way for you to let them know whether they were correct or not with the least possible impingement on your time as is possible. I say this because obviously answering a phone call, making polite small talk, and then discussing whether you will be attending or not obviously will take much longer than simply making a check and dropping a card in the mail with your regular post. Because they assume you are busy, they have tried to make it as easy as possible. You should always have at least 1 month to find the time to check one box and drop the card into the mail with your other mail, and I certainly wouldn't call this arduous.

They have chosen to ask everyone to reply, whether yes or no, because if they were to ask only those choosing to answer in one direction to reply, there were be no way of determining if a card were somehow lost in the mail or mislaid. Either way, it would result in something negative for the organizer, and possibly for you. Either they'd have food for people not actually attending at extra cost to them which could have been spent in other ways, or they'd have nothing for someone who showed up. They are not trying to place some burden upon you. They truly just want to be nice to you, and make it easy to be certain all their guests are well cared for.

I'm sorry you've had so many people not RSVP. I had several with my wedding. Most were people I knew were not coming (family from out of state) but I hated having to deal with the ones that didn't RSVP. My husband and I dealt with the ones from our friends, but dispatched our parents to get the info from their friends/relations.
