That show needs a new name,, like the NASTY homes if america or something for I dont see that those folks hoarder much of anyting but trash!! piles and piles of trash in most cases..the ones i saw was just old food and real trash where they just did not want to take it off/out of the house and it piled up and up then took over.

A hoarder is some that has to much stuff yes but not bags and piles of trash laying around that needs to just be took to the dump. Like one women had her bathroom pile full of dirty grown up diapers and other piles threw the house...this show is just about nasty nasty homes not people that have to many what knots, clothes, tvs or whatevers for those just incase days..

And people watch that dang show and then call me or you a hoarder.

    IT'S NOT THE SAME THING!!!!!

Now the term compulsive shopper I think is an awesome way that could be termed for some of the Extreme Coupon shoppers on that show. But as far as I can tell...not one of them are actually hoarders.

Neat shelves that have detergent and cereal and cleaners that can be easily gotten to and easily reached is not hoarding. Could they be buying too much....you bet. Have I purchased too much...sure. I had probably more cleaning supplies then we really needed...and when the Joplin Tornado hit we gathered up all the excess and donated it to them. A hoarder won't throw away the dang trash...let alone give away boxes and boxes of there belongings.

Sorry just getting this off my chest...we should start here ...when people term hoarding to correct them as to what hoarding actually is. IMO it's not helpful to the actual hoarder either to misuse that phrase because they are already in delusion as to how bad there homes are...we don't need to feed that delusion...by them seeing clean homes, well organized being called hoarding.
i posted along these lines in the stockpile section. people must have no idea. i think the term is thrown around loosely as you do. kinda makes me nuts

Ha ha, you had me wondering anyway.

But honestly, I do find some of the things I've seen on Extreme Couponing (for example) fall into the category of hoarding. But I think it's one of those things that are relative, and everyone's definition of it varies. Like DD has a drawer where she "stockpiles" candy lol. I call her a little hoarder. She got it from DH who does the same thing who I also say hoards. When I think of hoarding I think of fairy tales and little old elfen men hoarding coins of gold in their straw huts lol. So to me it's collecting a lot of something that is more than you need or plan to use. Just so you know it's there as somehow the knowing that you have it gives you some comfort or makes you feel good. And without it you would feel uncomfortable or freak out.

I think we all are like this to some degree, even people who don't coupon or chase deals. I guess it's a matter of the lengths you will go to to get "enough" and how much "enough" is to you that would make it problematic or unhealthy behavior.

On one hand, yeah I'm annoyed by the show and people asking me if I've watched it and "is that what you do?" kinds of stuff. But on the other hand........

Every year my hubby's employer does a food drive this time of year. I just go bonkers gathering up freebies to donate to it, because it's a contest too. Every other year, he'd bring in literally hundreds of items, and everyone is like "Um, where'd you get all that stuff?" And my hubby would just try to avoid the question and not explain why perhaps his household has 50 packs of dental floss or razors.

This year, though.........He can just smile politely and say "Ever seen that tv show Extreme Couponers? She's sorta like that. And no, we didn't pay for any of this."

And unlike the show, I won't be handing over 500 packs of ramen noodles, it's granola bars, razors, toothpaste and other things that people actually need!
