Default What would you have done???

This afternoon, we were at a chain fast food restaurant having a snack when DH went and got an unsweetened ice tea. Imagine the surprise when both he and I (a type 2 diabetic) took a small sip and found raspberry tea instead. Well, he took the tea back into the restaurant and spoke with a crew person who stated "we don't have the correct label yet"

Well DUH.. don't hook it up !!

Anyway, I talked to the shift supervisor, who gave me the same reason. I have talked to corporate and a local manager at another store. Totally feel like they aren't going to do anything about it. My point to both were if a child, a type 1 diabetic were to drink that thinking it was unsweetened there would be an bigger issue than a missing label. Even if an adult who is brittle drank that.... Who is going to tie ice tea at such a such time when they are in the ER? I know that is drastic. BUT.. what if??????

At the suggestion of my 19 yr DD, studying food service, I have called the health department to make sure it is changed today.

Am so scared and mad at what could have happened, what might happen, the carelessness and complacency of some people.

unfortunately, this is a common issue. i get diet soda all the time and dh gets sweetened tea with lemon eventhough he asks for unsweetened.

the health dept should handle the complaint.

    i wouldnt eat there anymore

As MoM said - it does happen all the time, especially here in the south - my DH just prefers unsweetened tea but he almost always gets a refill of sweet tea when we're in a restaurant. He's pretty much stopped ordering tea at all b/c as soon as he drinks 1/4 to 1/2 his glass someone walks up and refills it with sweet tea then he has to go to the trouble of asking for a new glass. They never even check, as I said, it's the south and it is simply assumed that you want your tea sweet. LOL (not making fun of your situation OP - making fun of us Southerners and our sweet tea)

I am not saying the restaurant shouldn't fix it and I do think you did the right thing in pointing out to them that it could be a health hazard for some people but I think if it's a big health concern I'd make a point to tell the person who took my order that I could not, under any circumstances, have something with sugar in it - scare them if need be. It happened to me when I waited tables eons ago - I would have customers tell me "just so you know, I could die if I ate (whatever food they were allergic to)" - and I made darn sure they did NOT get that food.

I'm a diabetic too. Type 2 but on 3 different insulins and 2 meds. It is very hard to control my diabetes despite trying hard. I do have gastroparesis which means I digest my food very slowly and that doesn't help.

Anyway... One of the movie theaters has weird tasting diet soda. I can't remember if it is Coke or Pepsi. The first time I got one (a very large one), I noticed the odd taste but was very thirsty so drank it all. My blood sugar was through the roof afterwards.

The next time we went was to a double feature of Toy Story. I just assumed the first time they had a crossed line or something and it would have been fixed. But no! It still tasted funny. I did take one swig and after that I just didn't drink any more. When they had a break between the movies I bought a bottle of water and ever since I have only had bottled water there.

I suppose I should have said something but I didn't. I used to have test strips to test for sugar in drinks. I no longer have any so I guess I can't really prove anything one way or the other.

In your case I would have said something but probably wouldn't have done anything beyond that. In the case of a type 1 child I would think it would be unlikely for them to drink tea. But if they did drink it and didn't notice the sweetness... What probably would have happened would be that they would test their blood at 2 hours after eating, or their parent would test them. They would note the high blood sugar and then they would shoot some insulin to compensate. At least that is how it works for the type 1's I know of. Sadly we type 2's have less leeway with our diet.

That is so unacceptable, and good for you for standing up and saying something. And the response: pure laziness!! It really burns me when people don't think through the consequences of their actions. Sometimes I don't think food service workers have any idea how important their job is, and how much people count on them to do it right. Excellent point about it affecting people with diabetes - it may seem like its not a big deal, but to some people it is literally life and death.

I would have been very annoyed also. You need to stand up for yourself and your son. I don't care if this worker make 7 a hr or 100hr they need to do what they should do. I have been to fastfood places or think food is not being handle right. I get grossed out when they don't do it right and will never go back.

I would be ticked also. So many people have issues with sugar, so stupid of them. Take a piece of masking tape and make a label till you get the label, come on?! I would go and make my own label if the issue isn't fixed tommorow.

I totally understand where you are comming from. People need to start taking food alleries seriously, food allergies can be a huge issue and like you said being diabetic and what could happen should have been taken seriouly by the workers aswell. My Dh drinks un sweetened tea and I usally order a diet what ever just because I think it is less carbonated or maybe just less sweet. But he thinks it is so funny form time to time to switch my drink with his because I am not a tea drinker. Now if they spiked his glass with sweetened tea that would be sweet. It would be a little pay back for him always getting me. In all seriousness I hope this matter is resolved and the health dept gets on all places of business about proper lableing and such things.

yeah, I'm the kind of person who would have said "Give me a marker, tape and a piece of paper and I'll do YOUR job for you, then tomorrow I'll give your boss a call"

I'm allergic to artificial sweeteners of any kind - Do you have any idea how difficult it is to avoid aspartame?
